New build thread

Stand test fitted in it's new home. My measurement was off by a mere 1/16" so it wouldn't fit. In comes the jigsaw, problem solved.

That's real nice, I haven't decided on the vertical dimension of my hood yet. I will most likely paint the back black

Picked up all the materials today for the canopy and didn't really plan on doing it, naturally I forgot one piece of trim and some canopy locks but those can be added on easily later.

What type of wood did you use to cover the 2x4s? Clean look

The skin on the stand itself is 1/4" sanded plywood, 20 bucks a sheet at home depot. The doors and canopy are 1/2" sanded plywood with custom molding, 35 bucks a sheet. Routers are your friend. Makes life so much easier

Tim, what router and bits did you use? I didn't realize that you could route the inside of the trim while already attached to the door panel.

TIA

5/32 ogee bit inside, 45 degree chamfer outside. Porter Cable router, don't remember model. You can route molding while on, but you lose depth because your bearing can't go very low.

Got the canopy finished, I want to add some type of wood artwork. Anyone know where I can get some ocean related ?

Some type of wood carving would be awesome. There are a couple of guys around here that do that sort of thing and I was playing around with that same idea. Good luck with your search for something unique.

Oh yea, did you ever consider using the European style hinges that are not visible from the front of the stand?

I considered those hinges right after I had already drilled the holes, oops. Beginner mistake. The hinges on my kitchen cabinets show, so it's not all that bad.

Well I got it stained and decided to do something a little different with the canopy. I trimmed out the inside of the canopy and cut a hole in it. I'm pricing out some stained glass that ( should ) light up nicely.

Sorry for all the questions, what kind of glue?

No problem Gary. I'm using Elmer's Carpenter's Wood Glue, it's sandable and paintable, but not stainable. Oh, and this stuff is STRONG. I mistakenly glued something together and I had to cut it off, it's bonding strength is ridiculous.
