Well there are many f/4L and f/2.8L lenses. Unlike the 50 f/1.8, the L's are by nature very expensive. The lens you have will aid as a learning tool. Choose your future purchases wisely.

I was thinking 17-40mm F4L for walk around lens... since on crop

censor.. it is really something like 25-55mm...

as its price is on friendly side lol.... and later possibly 24-70mm f2.8L

(maybe worth to save few hundreds bucks for this lens?)

and lastly... 70-200mm either f4/2.8L some roads down there :)

I have the 24-70 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8 IS, and am in love with them both. I thought long and hard between the 24-70 and the 24-105 but in the end decided the 24-70 was just a better lens.

Save for a long time. Really soak this stuff up. Your 50mm f/1.8 should get you by for now.Do experiments i.e. don't use anything below f/4 so you know what kind of shutter speeds you can get away with. Little things like that will help your decision.

Nice, I just receive my 40D several days ago but I don't have the time to play with it yet. when I do, I'll be asking many questions too.

enjoy your new camera
