New Camera Suggestions.... Post 20D.

1D MarkII. Don't know what they're selling for nowadays but it's still the best camera I've used- and I've tried just about all the top of the line cameras that are out- that includes the 1DsMII, 5D and D2H.
I know I'm gonna take some heat from that statement... but hey- I call em like I see em :p

That was already on my short list...... Very tempting.
Maybe I can find a deal on a used one on FredMiranda Buy and Sell forums....

Nikon D200, unless you have invested a lot of money on Canon Glass. If so, then I would recommend the same as above (gregr's recommendation) or 5D.

I would say 1Dmk2 as well. It's build to take the beatings of real photographic field work. It is heavier though.

However, often it's hard to recommand unless we know what you are going to use it for and what you shooting style is like. I.e. I never use 3fps on my 10D, while others complaint about it being too slow.

Well, if speed is your thing, then go for the 1DMII. Maybe wait a bit, is a 1DMIII due to be announced soon?

If you've got quality glass, want low noise, high resolution, wide angle, and more control over DOF, then go for the 5D.

Hey Greg- long time no see :)
I used the 5D (and 1DMsMII and D2H) each for a day and after looking at dozens of files on my screen it's my opinion the files from the 1DMII (no 's') are the quietest of the three cameras. The 5D doesn't handle 20K lighting as well as the 1DMII either- something I just found out a couple days ago.
But the wide angle side of things... you still have the 1.3x multiplier-- but that's a good thing for close-ups.

Hey Greg! Well, the D2h is like a no brainer - it's the noisiest camera ever produced by either Nikon or Canon!

"Quietest?" I think you mean least noisy? ;)

Anyways, I think the difference between the 5D and the 1DMII look pretty close, and if you don't need the speed/ruggedness of the 1DMII, then the 5D looks very appealing to me.

I know if I were to purchase a body today, it would be the 5D.

LOL , I'm going through something similar , Just a lower starting point .:p I have the Rebel XT and was looking at the 30D , 5D and the 1DMK IIN .

Man theses are hard decisions . I've been doing some reading on line about the Pros and cons of theses cameras . I'm a complete rookie so these are just comments I'm understanding from other people .

The 5D : The bigger files help with the definition of the files . And larger copies.
The 1.0 crop gives you true wide lens capability , But limits your telephoto use . When using telephoto , the longer lenses create vingetting ( spelling ) and soft edges. Also with macro and telephoto to get the same DOF as the 1.3 or 1.6 crop you need to raise the F number up .
The focus speeds are very good but the 1d are still faster , and the 1D still has a faster FPS .

From this I get the 5D has better portrait and landscape capabilities with bigger and better defined Images .

The 1D MK IIN : Focus and FPS are still the best for speed. The 1.3 crop gives you better telephoto and macro use . with the lower f stop for the needed DOF , you get a little more low light capabilities .

So I think the 1D MK II N gets the nod for wildlife and sports .

I know you guys have much better experience so please , please correct me If I misunderstood what I read .

Not to completely highjack ( sorry if it offends you , just PM me and I'll start a new thread ). For me the 30 D is still an upgrade from the XT , and can't figure out if the way more expensive bodies are worth my rookie status and I should wait until I learn more down the line .

Well, you can always crop that 12.4mp 5D file down to 8mp in post, and gain all of those "benefits" that a 1.x crop camera has.

I think you had it all right except for:
When using telephoto , the longer lenses create vingetting ( spelling ) and soft edges.
It's the wide angle lenses that will vignette not telephotos.
And yes- I agree that the 1DMII (n or otherwise) would be great for sports and wildlife. You won't need the speed for much else, but it's nice to have when you need it :D

LOL , I thought the same thing when reading that , but I'm not one to correct anyone with more experience .:D

2 other cons I read are that ,

1: lack of weather sealing creates some dust problems .

2: The 1.0 crop makes it necessary for premium glass , otherwise you will see the difference in the Images .
