Symphyllia spp.? Dye-job?
IMG_0487keeper.jpg

Thanks, Randy. I was wondering if it's freakish coloration is natural. Time will tell.
All of the scrolling Montipora in the top down shot came from other URS members.
I wonder if they recognize their frags/corals?
I'm currently looking for more frags of (different) scrolling corals.

Bird netting was too big. I used 3/4" hole plastic garden netting (used to keep deer from eating shrubs) and splined it into a screen frame that I cut to the dimensions of my aquarium. (This garden netting is sold in 7ft. x 100ft. rolls, so I have lot of extra netting available if anyone is interested- PM me.)

When a fish jumps the only thing I'm going to hear from now on is a splash back into the water. :)

sweet Blasto wellsi.. i was definately staring at that piece when i re-arranged everything.. i cant wait to get my hands on the bright red acan..

Wow, great looking tank! I have a question for you if you wouldn't mind lending a little guidance. I am new to saltwater (three weeks in on my first tank) and am already totally addicted. I am looking into upgrading my lighting from the fluorescent that came with the tank so I can do corals down the road, and I love the way your setup looks. I know when you go with the higher output lighting that heat is an issue. I had thought a glass cover was the only option prior to reading this thread. Is that why you just went with the netting?

If you've ever covered an aquarium with a glass top you'll find that several problems can develop that are detrimental for a reef aquarium:
*condensation forms and algae grows on the underside of the glass
*light penetration is diminished
*direct heat buildup can occur
*evaporation (thus cooling) is decreased
...not to mention that a glass top does nothing to increase oxygenation of the aquarium water. (In a reef aquarium you want to supersaturate the water with oxygen.)

The vast majority of reefkeepers on this website have a vented light hood constructed over their aquarium. Their hood prevents carpet surfing. In my case, I have pendant lighting- thus the garden netting.
