New Caribbean Discosoma in my Tokyo LFS

My LFS here in Tokyo has these interesting small blue discosoma in. They are listed as Caribbean bubble discs, but they aren't like anything I've seen here.

Thought I'd share.

I have no idea what they are, I'm wondering if they are worth spending $50 dollars each on...... They are only 2cm..... What to do, not sure if I like them that much!

They are nice, I would spend $25 CDN a polyp, no problem. You don't come across that color too often.

Discosoma carlgreni, very rare in blue. I live a couple hours away from the Keys and I'd do $50 for a blue one.

Hey Matt,

I was wondering about picking one of these up as well. Maybe I'll swing by later this week. Have you been in? Do they have quite a few?

Tom

I have 1 reserved, you are welcome to it if you like?

Cheers Matt. I picked one up tonight (and told them you wouldn't be buying one, though they have 3 left if you change your mind). One of the offspring will come your way, assuming it does well in the tank.

The high price for a single shroom was slightly cushioned by a couple of very cheap acquisitions - a Tubipora musica colony which had only a few bits alive, but seemed stable and I hope will recover, particularly if I frag off the living bits, and a flat piece of rock/coral skeleton with some GSP, a baby fungia, what looks like a 1cm patch of pavona, a similar sized couple of separate chalices, one encrusting coral I'm not sure what it is, and a baby fungiid. Both the T.musica and the flat piece of rock with 6 corals were about $1 each, so if even half the corals thrive, I've done well. :)

It is pricey over here. Actually the prices are higher if you work to current exchange rates. I think Matt and I are still working on the 100 yen to the dollar basis, which is waaay out of date.

It pays not to. If you look at the actual exchange rates, we'd never buy anything. I think the pound is pretty near the old 100 yen/$ rate these days. It's taught me a lesson or two about recycling my equipment though!

Those are really nice, I'd buy at least one, probably not multiples and hope for some quick and colorful growth! :D

I went for just the one and hope it will start multiplying before too long (Matt gets one of the offspring when it does). At the moment, the tank's in a bit of a transition stage, making it difficult to find exactly the right position for it. Well, it's looking fine at the moment (lovely color in the tank), but I don't expect it to start multiplying too quickly.

Am I right in assuming that blue coral = less light? I know that kind of follows for some of my blue zoas, but does it also apply for Discoma?

There were a bunch of these at a LFS here for $15 each, but they went pretty quickly. Certainly an interesting piece if you're into mushrooms.
