New Chevron Tang Help ASAP

Hey guys,

Just got my new Chevron Tang and I noticed something on his side.

There is something hanging off and the area around it looks inflamed.

What do you guys think it is?

Disease? Wound?

If it's a wound, I have some Melafix I could use to help.

Here's the video:

Here are some pics...

Thoughts?

Looks like a wound, possibly infected. I would play it safe, and use a broad spectrum antibiotic such as Furan-2 or Kanaplex. Melafix is an "all-natural" antibiotic alternative, but I've never had much luck with it.

Will Melafix, Selcon, Garlic, Vitamins be ok for the first few days?

He's also in there with a cleaner wrasse. Think that might be beneficial?

Soaking his food in Selcon, Zoecon, Vita-chem might boost the immune system enough to tackle an infection on it's own. The problem is, just like with humans, you don't get the benefits of taking vitamins right away.

Garlic will do nothing, and the cleaner wrasse will likely just annoy him right now.

Looks like he has been scratching his side on the rocks which means something is most likely bothering him. What is your salinity at? You may also cut down on lighting for a few days while treating him.

Just got him. Salinity is right at 1.024.

this would be my recommendation as well. What was the source of this fish?

Bought him online.

Do you think I'm wasting my time with Melafix? Had worked on a clown I had that was bitten all over.

Which of the antibiotics would be best? Guess they'll nuke the two pieces of rock I have in there. Guess I can just store those for a bit.

Whichever of the two recommended you can obtain. Having both available is always a good thing. The cleaner wrasse will exacerbate the problem not help it.

Thanks guys :)

I'll pick some up from a LFS over the weekend. Going to see how it looks Today and Tomorrow then if it stays the same / gets worse I'll be more aggressive.

Sort of like trying more naturally approaches first.

Which online place? Maybe ammonia burn?

Didn't think of ammonia burn, could cause white marks?

The site is taking very good care of me, they are just as concerned as I am.

I just want to see the little guy get better. :sad2:

+1 to antibiotics, when I notice infection I don't hesitate to treat, as bacterial infections can get serious very quickly. I've had good luck with Furan-2. Keep us updated..

Been treating for 3 days with Melafix and he's been eating Selcon + Garlic + Vitamin soaked food.

Do you think it's getting better?

nuxx...that looks very similar to what my kole is going through right now. from the first moment i saw "something" to the point it looked way worse than what you show was bout 3-4 days. i'm on day 2 of my second cycle of furan 2. he's still alive, but the wounds are still pretty gnarly. unfortunately, mine has refused to eat since i got him a week and a half ago. i've tried green and purple seaweed sheets, spirulina, and other green flake.

I'd echo the use of furan-2; also Nitrofuracin green powder has worked really well for me. I use it on all new fish in QT.
