new clam worries

so i bought the squamosa i was talking about...its beautiful! and i measured it at 12.75 inches! after about a 45 min. acclimation in a 5 gallon buvket (barley fit) i added him...he is open and happy!, the only thing that is worrying me, is he is shooting a cloud of white substance out (sperm im assuming) and i was always told thats like a last minutes thinks its gunna die thing.....should i worry? or is it norm. with the tank switch over?

That sixe her will likely pump out eggs also. I would do lots of water change.
Stress will induce spawn. It may or may not result in death of the clam

yikes! i hope it doesnt die!, how many water changes??? i have a 215 gallon tank, and got a pretty good skimmer on it....just so you can better estimate the water change buisness...btw thank you so much for always really looking out on this forum and being a major source of credible knowledge

When the test biosy the lams and find that they have sperms and eggs ready, the clam farmer stress the clam by put them out in the dry sun for several hours, then put them back into the raceway where they then spawn. This does not kill the clam, just get them to spawn. I think this is similar to what happen to your clam. He will be fine

I would change at least 25% of tank water then filter and skim the crap out of it. When clam farmers get clams to spawn it is in huge systems far larger than 200 gallons and when they are done spawning they pull the clam out of the water so that it doesnt die in the sperm and egg infested water. If you have not already done a water change do one and just monitor the situation. Hopefully everything will be fine.

For a 12 inches clam, the total amount of eggs and sperms got to be equal to quite a few table shrimps. i would do large water change also.

also keep your skimmer clean and running at 100%, running some carbon wouldn't hurt either.

good luck and let us know how you both make out.

If there are only a few squirts of sperms, then the total biomass from the spawn is not too bad. The tank should be fine.

sweet thats what i was hoping to hear...i am schedualed for a 20 gallon water change tommorrow any ways...

at this point you should be out of danger, the mass die off usually occurs within 24 hrs.

glad to hear and would love to see some more pics :)

i will def. get the pics up asap!!!

i have been neglecting new pics lately and i need to get some on! the clam is a slightly differenent color when when i picked up....because its in the middle of my tank where there is not direct mh lighting...and the super actinics kinda blue out the area....so it looks a little different..
