New Clowns on Their Way!

Last week our LFS told us they were expecting some black and white occell.'s, so today (came in Monday, but they've been closed until today) I was there 1/2 hour after they opened to check them out :)

Long story short - he's holding a pair for me :) This will give me time to watch them a little more and make sure the QT is ready for them.

This is a stupid question, but care shouldn't be any different for these than for the orange and white occell.'s correct - they're the same fish, just different color morphs?

Need help with terminology - is there a shorter name for b&w occell? How about b&w percs? (so I can contrast the two)

What would be the best way to tell a bw perc from a bw occell?
Just so I can double check :)

Right now they're kind of a muddy color, but they darken with age, right?

Between the occell.'s and the percs (black ones of course) do they both keep kind of orange faces? I think I've seen some that are all black and some that have some orange to their faces.
I know I've read different things about them, but I can't remember where :(

I think we might head back tonight so my husband can see them too, I may take some pics :)

I'm confused and excited all at the same time :) I want to make sure I have everything straight. We have a rose that's been in our tank for almost 6 weeks that I'm hoping these guys will take to, there aren't too many other wavy things in there to distract them. I've been planning this combination for over a year, and I'm very excited to see it finally happening :) I know there's no guarantee these will host the rose, but hopefully they'll at least swim by it so I can see the color combination I've been waiting for :)

Anyone want to pass on some info and/or celebrate with me??

Thanks!

they are black and white occell not perc
black false perc works
there is no bw percs
allot of chocolate percs are sold as Bw there is no guarontee they will color for you
good luck with the clowns
you will need to post pics now you know

It gets too confusing as the trade named black percula is in fact the brown saddleback Amphiprion Polymnus.

A. Ocellaris var. (B&W Ocellaris) has the same care requirements as a regular one and will darken with age.

It is very confusing, that's why I thought I should ask. I've noticed reading the fine print is very helpful sometimes! For example: LiveAquaria has the heading B&W Percs, but under that name, in smaller lettering they have A. occellaris.

One of the reasons I checked them out this morning was to make sure they weren't saddlebacks, I remembered reading that alot of times those are misleadingly labeled. These are not saddlebacks :)

New question: is this brooklynella season? If so what should I watch for and have on hand for treatment in case I need it? What about internal parasites in general?

Thanks!

B&W Ocellaris are going to be tank raised, you should not have any problem with brook unless a fish at the LFS has it & the clowns catch it from them.

The clowns will darken with age, by around 2 years they are usually all black and white, at 1 year they usually still have the orange face.

Black & white true percs are "onxy" percula's & they will usually have orange fins & face all their lives.

How about some folks post pics of black and white percs & onyx so we can help her tell the difference :)

Here are my Onxy true perc's. The one with all the black is an adult. The smaller one is still maturing & therefor does not have all of its black yet.

here is a pic I found of some younger black and white ocellaris in the photo gallery.
Notice the all over muddy brown color on ocellaris vs. the way the black developes on an onyx.

You're all so sweet! Thanks for helping me out. I thought that was the difference, but wanted to make sure.

So, ALL b&w occell.'s are tank bred/raised? I didn't know that. I'm guessing the ones at the store are still pretty young since they still have that dark honey/chocolate color. I asked our guy (who we've known for years and is a hobbyist as well as fish store guy) if they were wc or tank raised. He said that since they're not from ORA that he would assume they are wc since it didn't say specifically.

He has three pairs, no claim on mated or bonded, but they're friendly enough to each other and hang out together in three separate tanks, and they seem to be about the same size and coloration.

If I could find out for sure that would be great, I feel so much better going tank raised :) I don't know if the info provided is helpful for determining that or not, but I included it just in case.

Thanks so much!

Well, sometimes wild B&W's are collected but it's amazingly rare. They're usually sold at a huge premium to those that wish to breed and sell the resultant F1's, not to hobbyists at large.

Black and whites are EXTREEMLY hard to come by WC. they are only located in a small area off australia, most of which is protected & collection's are not allowed. The other portion I guess is infested with saltwater croc's & extreemly dangerous to collect there. Wild caughts go for a pretty penny! So unless your paying over $100 for each clown, its definatly tank raised.

Awesome! Love tank raised :) I feel so much more responsible!
What is a good/average price for two b&w's?

My kids like to name things so I've already starting thinking about names to suggest. I feel like we're talking about police cars when we say black and whites, so I'm trying to think of some good police names (one boy one girl of course ;))

Thanks guys, I think I have things straight now. We always QT, so I'm still going to do that (have no idea about prior conditions) but won't be too worried about brook - I feel a lot better :)

My husband told me I was weird when I told him I wanted to take the camera with me tonight - I guess he just isn't as addicted as I am :)

you can have fun naming the clowns

Those are fun names :)
My kids named our orange ones Marley and Jr. Don't know why, it's a little close to Finding Nemo but not quite.

I'm not too far off on the price then - that makes me feel good too :)
