new Crocea

Hola,
I've just received a ~3" Crocea from Sea Dwelling Creatures in SoCal. Its been a awhile since I've had clams, and I've never had a Crocea so I have a few questions:
The clam seems to be very responsive(mantle is well extended when the tank is lit), but other than a nice bright blue fringe- its mostly brown (even pale white right inline with siphons). Did it come from a over-lighted situation, or is this possibly its permanent coloration?
I would've post a pic, but at this point I'm not ultra concerned, as I just received the clam yesterday- and in general was very happy with how everything came in.

can we see a picture? It sounds like it might color up under your lighting. also keep it low in the tank for a while, work him into the brighter area

I'll try to post a pic later today or tomorrow (battery is dead in my cam). I've never posted a pic before- I assume its pretty straightforward?

So I shouldn't be too concerned about moving it around (as opposed to placing it permanently at first)? I only ask because I've seen the clams foot probing the rock I put it on, and I wondered how long it would take before it was going to permanently attach.

I would put a small flat rock (if available) under him on the bottom. That way you can let him adjust to your lights and set his foot on a moveable rock. after a while (week or two) you can start moving him up and don't have to worry about his foot.

He could color up quite a bit . I am assuming that it is in the tank with the 250 HQI's.

Although he is on the verge, I would still suggest feeding DT's also. I think it does them good.

gcrowptc, I just got a clam from them it looks awesome. For the money it might be the best bang for the buck I've ever gotten.

Temporarily in a smaller 65gal, with 196watt 50/50 PC's, my intention is to move it over the the tank with HQI after quarantining for a couple weeks.

Any experience with Sea Dwelling Creatures? Because I bought this clam as part of a much larger order (for work), I ended up paying a grand total of 19.95 (including shipping).

Man, I don't know if it'll last that long under those lights. Croceas are the most light hungary clams...

good luck man,

-Matthew

I don't think I'd leave it in there that long either, thats just not enough. Also what temp bulbs? In the HQI?

A clam can survive in sub-par lighting for a couple weeks in quarantine. Remember, they spend a couple days in complete darkness when shipped into the country.

I had my crocea in a 10 gal QT with 130w PC for a couple of weeks and he did fine. I would suggest getting it in the top half of the QT tank. Supplement some kind of live phyto and you should be fine.

I'm not too worried about having it in restricted light for a couple of weeks. It *is* high up right now, and actually, it has tended to clam-up at the very end of my current photoperiod. (If *it* thinks it has gotten enough light- who am I to argue?)
I'll post another pic in two weeks so we can see how poorly it has done:)

Effin I think from the looks of it, that it may already have been in sub standard lighting.

Do you think so? Like I said originally- I wasn't expecting a crocea to come in so brown, but after doing a little reading it seems that some *are* brown- especially when located high in the reef (lots of sun)- that's why I wondered if its possible it got too much light where it came from (and whether or not it would gain some additional blue color given optimal light).

If you think its probable it came from a low lighting situation- then I probably should reduce the QT time to get it under the HQI.?

In my experience with Sea Dwelling Creatures (so far), my impression is that they generally turn wild caught animals very quickly- I doubt the clam was in there facility longer than a few days.
