New Deodronephthya sp. study group?

Has anyone in this thread ever had a chance to try Carnations in a ZEOvit system? The systems produce massive amounts of bacterial mats that enter the water column via the pump action of the reactor.

Nope sorry :D Been a while since I read all the way thru myself  I'll try the search feature late tonight (only time it works for me) and I'll see what I come up with :D

Mary, I was hoping to get a full update from you on how long your dendros have been with you, what your current setup is, and your husbandry techniques.

It seems as if Mary has the record here of three years in captivity, and we should all get down on our knees and beg her for knowledge.

I honestly haven't done anything special since I put the new light system on the tank.

90 gallon with
2 x 400 watt MH 14K
4 x 65 watt pc 2 are 12K and 2 are actinic
24 watt T-5 and
4 moonlights that flash with a random pattern

the tank is running a tidepool 2 filter and an aqua clear skimmer.

ozone sometimes sometimes not. and 2 mangroves growing in the sump

3 maxijet 1200 powerheads.

that is about it.

That equals a nutrient rich water column. small sump, and a poor skimmer, hmm, look down your 90 longways and tell me what color the water is. I bet its a bit tarnished. This would make sense as to why you are keeping a dendro successfully. Maybe you have found a clue or the "WAY" to do it! Plus the tidepool sump is known for not breaking down nitrates totally.

This is great info, maybe others should try setups similar and see if they get the same results.

thanks,

Rick

Actually my water is clear as clear can be. Plus the mangroves use the nitrates. Since they went in the nitrate stay at 0 -5 on the aquarium pharm test kit.

But I have watched them eat baby brine shrimp. both live and frozen.

I sometimes feed cyclopeeze, dt's and oyster eggs. Not regular or anything but sometimes. When the mood strikes or when something looks hungry.

actually, a better measure is scooping out a small cupful in a white plastic dixie cup and comparing to a another cup of RO/DI or distilled water. that will give you a very good comparison of coloration.

the glass often tints it off, even with starfire. some acrylics will also have a slight tint but obviously not as bad as typical glass.

okay water in white container, still clear. Even when I use a bucket at about half full it is still clear.

Mary, are you still without substrate?

How often are you feeding?

Are you SURE they are taking baby brine shrimp? Any pictures?

How often do you blast the rocks?

How often do you change water, and how much? How often do you feed DT's or other algal product?

How long exactly have you kept your specimens now?

Mary, please forgive the persistent questioning. I am thinking that it would be a good idea to interview you for an article in Reef Central, and include pictures of your Dendros. It would interest a number of people and would help move us toward a Forum. What do you think about an interview and article? We would need pictures of your entire setup- refugium, closeups of the appearance of the rocks and surfaces and the dendros.

Charles, you mentioned a few pages back that some work was being done at http://coralite.net/ regarding I think photos of dendros feeding. Ther does seem to be changes to the site, but nothing regarding dendros so just wondering how thats going. Congrats to Mary with the dendros. Hopefully the interview/article goes through I cant wait.

Sorry, I am coming out of nowhere but have had some limited sucess with non/photo stuff. I used to work at an LFS and when unpacking rock found a box that yeilded about 30 small mantis shrimp, and my girlfriend at the time had a 12 gallon eclipse with guppies. Needless to say, my angler ate the guppies, and I set the manti up in the tank to see what would happen. I let the tank go after that but was thinking about the lack of skimmer and constant flow, and I was breeding clownfish at the time so had phyto/rotifers on hand. I started putting in weird sponges I would find, but the two show pieces were a dendronepthea and what I ID as a stereonepthea (the branches were much more lanky) but the best was blue encrusting sponge that was out of control. I kept alive those blue/orange encrusting tunicates also. Then I got bored and put it all in my fuge and put an octopus in there, but I kept the filter feeders for more than a year (both neptheas grew and I fraged them). So, who is going to set up the ANTI-reef tank...

Mary- a few more questions! How often do you clean the glass? What's growing on the glass- are you seeing any diatoms? Do you use RO water, or are there silicates in your water?

David- Jake Adams is working with the videocamera, but unfortunately lost the dendro colonies suddenly, after about one month.

One more thing- Mary, what temps are you running? And, have there been any temp spikes or sudden changes of salinity that the dendros have successfully weathered?

Mary- It occurs to me that if you are illuminating the sump for the mangroves, you may be growing diatoms on that Tidepool wheel that are constantly being knocked off into the water. How long has your Tidepool been in operation?
-Charles

okay guys I have printed out your questions will take them to work tomorrow and try to work on answering them for you and will post when I get home tomorrow night if I can
