New false percs... and anemone question

I picked up a pair of small false percs about two months ago. After about a month in my q-tank, they were introduced into the 55g. When I moved them, I brought over their piece of 4" t-shaped PVC pipe that I gave them in quarantine. I figured having something familiar would help reduce their stress.

They are quite happy, and have decided to start hosting a large T-shaped piece of PVC pipe. They bring the pipe food and sleep in it at night. Crazy clowns, huh? :)

After waiting for another month, I'm considering getting them an anemone.

What's the best way to quarantine this new creature?

kind regards,
Rusty

Others may disagree, but I wouldn't bother to QT it if you don't have any other anemones which it may infect.

I would only qt it if it looked sick and you were worried about dying and fouling the tank, or you wanted to do an antibacterial treatment on it.

Otherwise, just a slow acclimation and go for it.

What type of anemone are you planning on? Make sure you cover all powerheads, pumps, or any other dangerous items...

Honesty, I haven't decided. I have two LFS places locally... and I'll watch until I see something I like that appears healthy. I'd prefer a smaller anemone... mostly because I really enjoy watching animals grow.

I have two powerheads... the hang-on (rotating) has a hard cap on the opening to prevent stuff from going in. The other is in the back of the tank at the bottom. I have a section of sponge that I've zip-tied on the intake to prevent my existing crabs and snails from becoming puree.

You'll need to sponge the intake on ALL powerheads ... anemones get sucked into the weirdest places...

I recommend a BTA, rose or green .... also try to get one that is clone ....

What type of lighting do you have? What type of flow? sand or no sand? ... these will all affect the type of anemone that you can get, but BTAs seem adaptable to a wide variety of tanks...

I'll look into sponging the other intake, thank you.

Once upon a time I had a H. Magnifica... but it grew much too large for my (then) tank and I had to find it another home. I really miss that animal.

I have just over 2w per gallon. T-5s. My sand bed isn't what I'd consider deep, but it's just over 3 inches. A some crushed coral at the bottom, but mostly fine aragonite.

My flow is pretty significant, but I've never counted it up. Between the powerheads, the skimmer and the refugium/sump... water doesn't stay still long.

Something cool (and OT)... in the last couple of weeks, I've discovered three baby starfish. Maybe they were hitchhikers on some live rock I picked up last month. :)

hey lawrence! i too have some hitchhikers, and being new to this game, i sit and watch these strange creatures, sometimes for hours, i just sit in front of it and watch! i have found some asternia stars, snails and other cool creatures! anyway, good luck with the nem search!

My very last anemone was a corkscrew... I kept it in my 25g tank with a clarkii... the clarkii lived like a princess.

As much as I'd like a RTBA, I don't see the point in getting an animal that my clowns may not host with.

I'm seriously thinking about another H. Magnifica. My life savings is now being drained into a 55g tank... will that be enough space for the anemone?

Thoughts?

Kind regards,
Lawrence

I am not an expert with H. magnifica, but I kept one briefly. What I noticed is unlike any other anemone that I have kept, H. magnifica will definetly move to the brightest and highest flow area of the tank. Their attraction to light is uncanny, IME. They also can reach 3' in diameter:eek1:

That being said, a 55 with T5s probably won't cut it. I would wait for more exprienced anemone keepers to chime in though....

My plan is to double my existing light.

As much as I adore my pair of false percs (from their behavior, I believe they are a pair), I wish they were compatible with more anemones.

Ideally you would upgrade to a point source lighting like MH ... some will say that wattage is less important than spectrum and the light being a point source. Some claim that H. magnifica are "confused" by flourescnts...

BTW, I had TR false perks host both an LTA and BTA ....

I am not trying to discourage you though, as I believe that alot of "reef rules" are nonsense...

I have a tank raised B/W occelaris and its hosting in my corkscrew. It took two days before the hosting happened.
