New Fish(es)!!!

I bought a Red Leaf Fish and a Green Coris Wrasse today and here are the pics..

Now there's a problem...After I put the wrasse in, I left the room to dump the plastic bag that it came with and when I came back the wrasse was NOWHERE to be found. I don't have too much rocks so it's not too hard to see if he is in a hole or something. I still don't know what happened to him. Although I do have a suspect which is my miniature dachshund dog. She was the only one in the room when I was gone for 30 seconds and she ran out right when I came in.

I was thinking that the fish jumped (because it did look like someone had moved the sand in my tank when I came back) and my dog got a hold of it and ate it. Can they really eat live fish? I know my lion fish didn't eat it because they were the same size and my leaf fish is only 2 inches and was still in the bag.

What do you guys think happened?
 
Is that leaf fish bigger than the wrasse ? If they were in the same tank then that would have been an expensive meal.

or the lesser , he could have dug in the sand or under rock work... my flasher did that since all the other fish wanted to eat it...
 
Yes I do have a deep sand bed. ok so that make sense because sand was all over my tank when I came back in. but my problem now is that I moved the rocks, how about if I placed a rock on top of where he was hiding. Can he still get out?
 
They can slither through the sand like a snake by flapping their fins and angulating their bodies...my old red coris used to do it prior to sleeping everynight
 
coulda jumped too, but both my yellow coris and my flasher wrasse like to hide in the sandbed or in crevices near the sand at night.

i think most coris wrasses dig themselves into the sandbed when they are scared and at night. like delsol650 said, they can kinda move through the sand, so it should hopefully it will come out in the next day or two. or if its easy to take out the rocks and you are really worried you can use a net and skim the top of the sandbed, though i think that would create more problems than its worth..
 
I know I created a problem already. When I was moving the rocks, I accidentally knock over the rock my RBTA just settled into. Now I can't keep him in a place where I want him to stay or somewhere I can see him. I've been trying to move him and I think I'm really stressing him out.

A lesson learned that I should always research the fish before putting it in my tank.

My Leaf Fish is only 2 inches by the way so I'm sure he didn't eat my wrasse.
 
wait, you do know about leaf fish though right? they're poisonous, and they can eat things bigger than their mouth look. Not to the extent of anglers, but they can still chomp down on something that'll fit... though a 2" leaf fish... that's pretty small.

I'm betting the wrasse is hiding in a hole somewhere (at least that's what we all hope right?).

btw, sorry if you knew all this (about the leaf), just want to be sure =X
 
Yeah the store warned me about them, but I told them that my smallest fish is a 2 inch occ. clown and he said that it'll be fine as long as both of the fish grows the same time.

When I saw it, I couldn't resist. I've never seen a fish look this cool before. I've seen other color, but never a red one.

But I thought they're just like lionfish though? Just venomous but not poisonous. Am I right or they really are poisonous?
 
It could be bad depending on your body chemistry and how your body reacts to the toxin....

Everyone reacts differently to the same poinson... like a bee sting some dont flinch some get taken to a hospital.. hopefully you get the analogy there..
 
I don' t know exactly what the definition difference is between poisonous and venemous... but I guess it's like a bee sting, but about 3x as bad.

Like delsol said, you'll either react to it a little bit like a bee sting, or you'll be in the hospital. Whatever you do, never put your hands in the tank without really thick gloves, even if you see the leaf fish on the other side of the tank... (that's what I would do, and why I don't have a leaf fish)

Even with gloves, if you get a dead on sting, it'll go through.

I'd still be worried about the leaf eating the 2 inch occ... but you should be ok.

If I were you, I'd keep a leaf fish separate from any other fish, or keep it with fish at least 1.5x it's size.

ok so I found the wrasse's tail sticking out so I poked the sand a little and he came out. the bad news is that he was swimming funny and he has a what looks like a bruise on the middle part of his body. So I'm assuming he got crushed by the rocks when I was moving it or something. OR maybe because when I was about to put him in the tank he jumped out of the net and fell on the floor (carpet). I forgot to mention that.

Anyway, I'm really undecided when it comes to my leaf fish. I really want to keep it but I don't want anything to happen to my clowns because they're a pair and host a BTA (which took me a while to train them). So I might get rid of him and trade him for a MORE peaceful fish.

Do you guys have any recommendation? I don't want gobys or any other fish that just stays in one spot and hides all day. :)

I just picked up a pair of tailspot blennies, blennies are always fun =)

Do you have a fuge? The leaf fish may be able to live in a big enough fuge.

When I get my tank setup, my fuge will be dedicated to macro, of course pods, and either an angler or a leaf fish ;)
 
You don't want fish that stay in one spot and you get a leaf fish.. Isn't it staying in one spot all day long unless you feed it??
 
Me not wanting a fish that stays in one spot happened after I got the leaf fish.

Kinetic I was thinking about the same thing. I have a 20 gallon fuge and I was just going to put him in there because I really don't want to sell him. This is the first time I've seen a leaf fish this color in a long time.

BTW I just tried feeding him a big ghost shrimp (about 1") and he didn't eat it. Then I put a smaller one and he ate it right away. So I think as of right now my 2" clown would be ok. Maybe next month I'll transfer him.
 
20g fuge should be plenty for him! make the fuge up real nice, some LR, put some cool macros in there, and the leaf fish. I think that'd be a perfect setup. Plus it'll be easier to feed since there's a higher probability that he'll find a shrimp or something swimming around.

by the way, if you were considering selling, I'd take it =) I've never seen a red one before!
 
I know I've never seen one this color either. Always yellowish one, but they look cool also. You'll be first on my list if I ever sell him.
