New Flavoguttatus Anthias

SD Guy,

I can verify your impression of P. lori. I purchased a trio of P. lori about two weeks ago. They are still in quarantine. One is eating brine shrimp and mysis fairly well. One is looking at the brine shrimp and mysis ( and other foods) but is not eating and is slowly becoming emaciated. The third one disappeared within about a week and never ate at all. They're very shy and run for cover whenever I approach the tank but the eating one will come out. I'm not optimistic that the eating one will survive in my dispaly tank because they are so shy but I'm hopeful. He has more time in quarantine to really get strong before I put him in. These P. flavoguttatus look really nice and I may try them if I can find some. Keep us posted with some pics on how yours do.

I am really glad to see that everyone's anthias are doing so well, these really are an exceptional species!

I think that I may be buying a couple more soon.

Well, unfortunately one of mine decided to hide in my maxijet mod while it was off for 5 minutes. I don't think I need to elaborate

So my only complaint about these fish so far is that they are a bit dinky.

Seems I jinxed myself by posting

My two remaining anthias were doing great in my temporary 60g FO tank, with a small asfur angel and small niger trigger. Always out, always eating, no problems. Even with the occasional chasing from the angel and trigger. I figured they were well acclimated at this point, so when I moved, I decided to throw them into the main reef with all the other anthias. Epic failure. They never showed themselves. Always hiding in the rocks. Never ate again. I found their bodies last night

Not sure what happened. Two theories: Too many fish in the reef freaked them out (no one acctually paid them any attention though), or too much light kept them hidden. The 60g was running 4-6 T5's though, so it wasn't dim by any stretch.

Sorry to hear that Peter. Wonder why they did that... spooked would be my initial guess as well if they were otherwise healthy.

Sorry to hear that....I had the same experience. They were hardy, eating great, and then forced into hiding. I couldn't even find them to remove them to a safer tank, and never saw them again

Did you see a specific culprit? Or just general hiding for no specific reason?

they'd get chased by my labouti's wrasse a bit, but nothing too bad. i saw them a little bit during the first two or three days, but after that they hid constantly, even during feeding.

SDguy-Sorrry to hear this, when I moved mine from my 50g tank to my 120 reef with lots of fish I lost 2 of the 5 I had. The rest are all doing well though.

That was about 10 days ago so I presume it's gone. It just seems P. lori, flavoguttatus and their close relatives are very shy and delicate and very difficult.

I thought the same thing, but the ones I had were neither delicate or difficult. They ate pretty much any frozen meaty food, even snatching food away from the niger trigger :lol: They were downright bold.

Something about the reef, compared to the FO 60g, caused a major change in behavior. I'm thinking it's the light. I have a friend who also got some, and he only sees his, hanging out with a mess of other anthias, while the lights are out. Hmmm.....

Maybe the depth at which they are collected affects light sensitivity.Maybe some are collected in shallower locations and consequently are better adapted to brighter light. The funny thing about my P. lori is that his fins were all intact and the other anthias were ignoring him so it's not like he was getting beat up and having to hide because of that. Might still be alive but I doubt it.

They are doing great, I am going to buy 3 more soon, I will send pics for all when I have them. These are really docile and easy to take care of,
