new gigantea

Assuming that FedEx is still operating smoothly and on time tomorrow, my new gigantea should be arriving tomorrow morning. Its my first carpet, so I'm a tad bit nervous even though I've read all I can find on them. Anyone have any tips?

Were did you get it from? Acclimate slow and ensure that you have medium flow over the oral disc until she settles in.oh one more thing don't fiddle with her to much just let her settle in on her own.please post a few pictures when she comes in.
 
I ordered it from Blue Zoo. And thanks for the tips! Should be here within the hour, hopefully my power doesn't go out. Stupid Irene
 
Fedex just got here. The bag looked a bit fouled up so I quickly got the nem in my tank. All looks well so far. The mouth was slightly opened and was expelling waste, which was to be expected I think. The little bugger would not let go of my hand when I put him in, which is hopefully a good sign. I have the flow turned down a bit for him to settle in.

in what seems to be the quickest hosting ever, my captive clowns have already abandoned their others homes and moved into the gig (4 hours or so). I know gigs appreciate a clown so hopefully it'll keep acclimating well. Not gonna lie, that nem looks pretty fluffy and comfortable.

well it seems my nem is a bit deflated today, but that may be because its moving around. It moved around a bit on the rocks and is right up against a maxi mini now. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it being deflated or if it is still acclimating itself to my tank. A good sign is the mouth isn't exactly gaping. Its open, but not a lot, and isnt spewing anything. Here are some pics:

my gig is still alive, for now at least. Knock on wood. Its foot is secure and hasn't moved from its spot since sunday. It stays fully inflated during the day and shrinks down a bit at night. Hopefully thats not a bad sign. During the day the mouth seems more closed than it has before and is pretty much completely shut. Definitely better than before and defintiely not gaping.

The foot is also blue. Is that any indication of the color it will turn once it settles in? or does that not have any relevance?

I'll put some pics up on thursday as i'm pretty swamped with school and work right now.

All's good. The fact that it is expanding more during the day is a good sign. It generally means that there is at least some photosynthesis going on. Just give it time. They've done studies and population doubling rates for zooxanthellae in anemones can be pretty long - like 7-20 days - so it may take some time for it to get fully back up to speed. I just mention the "days" so that you don't think that we're talking a day or two - I wouldn't worry about it.

Blue column is not uncommon in this species and is no indicator of the final color of the rest of the anemone. Based on its current color, I doubt it will turn blue. There is definitely some yellow pigmentation on the oral disk and tentacles, so it could be a yellowish brown or a green color. Time will tell :) I think these anemones look awesome even if they are "brown" because they always have some color to them and are never dull.
 
yeah i can see hints of green/yellow, i just thought that maybe it was because its bleached out and that the foot was a proper indicator. Either way I'll be happy so long as it survives. I'm glad its got good signs of health. We got a long road ahead of us still.
 
Just to give you a sense, here's what it MIGHT look like if it stays "cream" colored.

See how the column is blue, but the rest of the anemone is not? I have a feeling yours may be green, but we'll see...
 
Here is one that I had and the base was blue as well. When I got it looked a lot like yours and under a 250hqi bulb in a 30 gallon cube she looked like the attached picture.

well i got home from work and she had moved from her bommie and onto a plug with a small acro colony on it. The acro look fine, but the gigs mouth was wide open. She wasn't fully attached so i moved her back to the place where she was away from my corals and she attached to the rock again. The good news is my male clown has been kicked out and is back in the frogspawn so that could lessen the stress on the nem although she still has to contend with the female. On the positive side she still isn't deflated and was still pretty sticky. Hopefully she's just doing some internal water changes. Its only been about five days hopefully shes still settling in,

How's it doing?
 
well i had to take it out of the tank yesterday. the day after I posted the last update it moved to the back of the tank all the way at the bottom and attached itself to a acro colony. I moved it back to where it was and the next day its mouth was perfectly tight and inflated all day. The next day it was face down in the sand. I flipped it over and it seemed to recover ok but then it began to crawl across the back glass toward my sebae. It made it to within about six inches of the sebae and then it finally croaked and I took it out before it could harm anything.

Idk but I think it was either battling with the sebae or the clowns killed it. Damn clowns kill every anemone in the tank except for the one I thought had the worst chances of surviving-the sebae. It was small and almost completely white when i got it. It took the clowns a week to find it and has looked fine for the entire two or three months Ive had it. Its even regainging its color despite all the clown love. This hobby is mind boggling sometimes.
