New Gigantic jawfish

Well I got awesome news today, my lfs got me a smaller banded jawfish. They called me to let me know. I stopped by after work to see him and man he is awesome. This one is about 4" long. Heavy bodied fishes. I'll be picking him up after Qt in about 2 weeks. As long as he makes it he's mine. This one seems much more "jawfish like". More skittish and alert. Seems healthier too, the other one had damage to the flap that covers his gills on his left side. This one looks 100%. Can't wait.:bounce2:

I have collected and kept them in the past, I usually find them in really shallow water, sometimes under 15 feet deep. Unlike other jawfish they also almost always have 2 burrow entrances about 3 feet apart in the ocean. I have on occasion found them in the intercoastal in West Palm Beach county, but not for a while.

I have never had them act like the one you had, they were always just like other jawfish, skittish and very shy. I also kept mine with smaller fish and never had them eat anything, but I could easily see them trying. Other then the size, which means a much bigger tank and a deeper substrate, they were no different then any other jawfish I have kept. They ate almost everything I fed the tank, were fairly peaceful and stole rubble from other jawfish burrows, they occasionally moved their burrows, dug around the tank and would have jumped if I didn't have a fully covered tank.

Wow thanks for the input. I did a little more research and it seems jawfish don't do too well in qt so I brought the fish home tonight. He seems much more jawfish like, pretty much what you described. Seems like a very healthy specimen ans much smaller than the other one.

Thanks, Yeah I was a little worried so I put pvc pipe in but he just found a spot he liked and made a burrow. He is constantly cleaning it and moving rubble around. He is very cool.

Jawfish is doing great. Still eating and has not moved.

Awesome fish but it looks like a fish that will eat what it can. If you check it on fishbase it even says fish make up a part of its natural diet. Do something about the clown before it gets eaten.
