New guys - baby Regal and Venustus

swing a and a miss made me laugh, but I think it's because my Reds are making a run at those pesky Cardinals and Pirates.

Go Cards! (Damn Pirates need to fall off)

Sorry to hear that your fish didn't make it. A pair of Venustus would be awesome, they have truly become one of my favorite Centropyge angels.

FWIW, nobody is perfect, including dd, nya etc etc. You can go back and find just as harsh reactions to other vendors on these forums, I'm sure. IMO, we should be grateful of such online vendors of rare and beautiful fish, especially those of us who lack a quality LFS. I have no experience with NYA, so i cannot provide feedback on them, but I have read +'s and -'s.. I hope it all works out for you!

Good luck,
Jacob.

"swing and a miss...my friendship with Michael is based on rare fish, period.."

:rolleye1:

If you say so...I mean I guess I have to take your word for that, despite there is no way of proving that either way. I said you come off as being a shill, not that you were in fact a known shill. I didn't have to check "deep" enough to come across you mentioning NYA or calling Michael to get this fish or that in a fish discussion...You constantly promote a vendor that is not a sponsor. <<<there are two...nya does and lrf that does not...have you been to the large tank section where hundreds of non sponsors are discussed.....Maybe BrianD or Bill can clarify their terms on those type of posts. <<<<<glad you mentioned this....it was approx. 3 weeks ago that I said in a forum that non sponsored vendors would be censored out and , I believe, I was BrianD, that said that was not the case...but that was 3-4 weeks ago...>>>>>Next time I will only read your comments on RC, because they are the only ones that matter.

I would have more respect for your comments regarding NYA if you had initially stated you had similar issues like the ones that I and other RC members have had. <<<<<<<so...a foot note is now needed????? it is somewhere on my build thread and other threads>>>>>>It was only after you were called out by the other RC member, that you became defensive, and then admitted to having issues with NYA.<<<<<<Wrong, I get equally defensive and protective when people talk smack about kevin and dd, pia, bz etc. where were you on that thread>>>>You may have mentioned it in the past, but you certainly have not mentioned anything recently until your earlier post in this thread.

If you want to continue this argument, you can PM with your issues. I will not further take the focus away from Carib and his deceased fish. The one thing I will give you is that you are a loyal friend.

Now let's form a hippie drum circle and sing "Kumbaya". :love2:

dude, think about it this way, in purely selfish terms...lol, why in the world would I want to share any rare fish connection I have with other people? the more that know about the source the less chance I have of possibly obtaining what I want...
I spoke with happyjack earlier and was reminded of how bummed I was with Michael when I sold him some triggers last nov or so...he didn't come thru on price and I got way less than I expected, I went out of my way to express my unhappiness with him in here countless times and avoided nya for a long time because of it, the mex finescale currently at nya was part of that collection...
but it can happen anywhere online with any vendor...

Ted- It is time to heal, I have no ill will towards you, but I do love a good arguement

So back to the fish...

Then there is the issue of the Regal. He has a 2" Regal from Sumatra, which he is going to give me an update on tomorrow. Truth be told, I'm not really sure where Sumatra is - could be Indo, and the price is almost double what the little dudes are - back to that "you get what you pay for" kind of thing.

Sumatra is an Island in western Indonesia, North North West of Australia. Normally Indo Regals are grey bellies but since Sumatra is in the Indian Ocean you get yellow bellies from there. Just FYI

So back to the fish...

Michael went what I would call "over and above" to send me videos of the new 1" venustus angels feeding and the larger venustus angels eating. These were videos shot with a phone and sent directly to me, not copies of something he's all ready posted on his website. He was also quick to point out that not all of them were eating, which he didn't have to do, and I appreciated.

So the question now is, what should I order.

I want a pair of venustus in my tank eventually, does it make sense to get them both now? A small one and a larger one? Maybe don't roll the dice on the smaller one and just get the larger one.

I think if it's eating, I'm probably going to order that and one of the larger venustus on my makeup order and ask him to double check that they are eating prior to shipping. I feel like i'm being a pain in the Ars doing that, but I don't do any less when I buy fish locally.

I don't know what it is, but those little venustus are just really tempting, especially with the video of them eating. Of course the one he sent me may have been eating prior to shipping to, so its very possible that I end up in the same sinking boat I was in before.

Enough rambling, give me your opinions if you feel so inclined. I'm going to sleep on it tonight - while checking my thread - and make a decision in the manana after I get a status update on the Sumatran Regal. Either way, I'm hopeful to have fish to dote on this weekend.

I feel like I am in the middle when it comes to keeping fish and coral. I created a breeding pair of Flame Angels by having one adult and adding a very small one to my 300. It took months for the male to accept the female and since the pairing I have seen them mate twice and spawn once. Yesterday I saw my larger Regal finally doing something besides chasing my smaller one. I am not sure what it was but it is nice not to have my smaller ones fins tore up. I have now lost two baby Regals, the first came from NYA, did not ship well and died on the second day, was given store credit and purchased a juvenile misbar from the Red sea which ate on the second day I got him and continues to do very well. Last week my LFS said one of his wholesaler's had a 2" juvenile Regal $40 and a 3 to 4" Red sea Regal $100. Can't lose right? Wrong the 2" came in at 1" a baby and did not last 1 day even though it was eating on the first day and the 3 to 4" came in 5 to 6". ARGH!! Baby Regals belong in the ocean not in a store. I have received 4 fish from NYA, three did very well ate right away with the fourth being the baby regal. If you go back and read articles from anyone they will all say the same thing "œStay away from the very small and the very large". In pairing angels I have tried Queens and Blue Rings also. The Queens I had were a large juvenile and a small juvenile did great and got along fine for several months in a 65, the larger one doubled in size so I upgraded to a 125 - 6' tank and holy heck broke out so I sold the larger one and kept the smaller one. On the blue rings one was slightly larger, got along great at the fish store, got along great in QT but when I placed them in my 300 the slightly larger one chased the smaller one until death, so having a larger tank is not always key to pairing. The first picture is one of my red sea regals and the other is my juvenile when she was in a QT tank.

Both are beautiful fish, I appreciate you sharing your experience.

I went ahead and ordered one of the 2 - 3" Venustus and a 3" Regal. I was told both were eating in the store, so I have high hopes. The babies are really cool, but in the end, without being able to see them, I had to pass - I hope they go to a good home.

I'm hopeful that I got my order in on time this afternoon for delivery tomorrow. That will give me the weekend to spend some time getting them comfortable.

from Jake Adams...
"As angelfish go, the good ole regal angelfish, Pygoplites diacanthus, doesn’t come in too many variations; you get the grey chested Pacific Form and the yellow chested Indian Ocean and Red Sea form. Occasionally we come across a slightly scribbled regal angelfish and even more seldomly, a stunning all yellow and white “xanthic” regal angelfish such as this one is collected.

While pictures of xanthic regal angelfish do exist, we believe this may be the first time that a gold and yellow Pygoplites has been filmed, and you can see the stunning appearance of this unusual creature. Xanthic regal angelfish are usually only collected in the Indian Ocean, often from the Maldives, which seems to perhaps be a genetic “relation” to the fishes’ already golden yellow face and chest.

Alas, many if not most of these golden regal angelfish are reported to change back to more normal coloration and we have no confirmed reports of an individual retaining the unusual color scheme. Although the regal angelfish is quite different from the Coral Beauty, perhaps this will be one specimen to retain all or some of its all-golden coloration like Jimmy Ma’s Koi Coral Beauty. Thanks to Jyunichi Yamasaki of Marine Gift for sharing this beautiful fish with us."

that last paragraph is the kicker...these fish often come with a hefty price tag only to have the fish revert to its "normal" coloration a few months later...a huge bummer, lol...

Yeah no kidding! That would make me think the color form is related to environmental or dietary influence. Very interesting, thank you for sharing that info.

Where did the second misbar regal angel come from?

Where did the second misbar regal angel come from?

I only had/have one and it was labeled Red Sea and came from NYA. All three of the regals I currently have are Red Sea, the first came from my LFS (Quality Marine), the second NYA, the third LFS (ERI)

OK, so here we go with tround two, both fish arrived just afte 9 a.m. this morning.

Both came in much thicker than the previous two fish - which is a good sign. The venustus was on it's side, which makes me a little leary, but i'm not giving up hope yet. It had righted itself in the bucket, so hopefully it's just stressed out from the trip.

I've got quite the pH difference to make up, 7.5 or smidge lower up to 8.2 in my QT, so i'm dripping somewhat slow.

Lights off in the QT and the bucket is covered with a towel to minimize stress on these guys.

Bonus: The Regal came in as a misbar! Some people may not like that, but I think it's cool and given the choice, would choose a misbar over a regular.

I'll get some pictures up shortly.

Thanks for the update, best of luck to you.

On some small regals I've seen the misbar turn into a full bar or be absorbed by a neighboring bar as the fish grows.

Interesting info on the misbar Regal, hopefully he lives a long life and I get to see that happen.

Venustus came through acclimation well. Room is dark and lights are off, i'm going to go to work and let them settle in and try to feed this afternoon/tonight under subdued lighting.

First impression is both fish seem to be healthy and diseases free, won't really know until I see them under full lighting though.

Good luck, I acclimated a 2 inch venustus last night. Will be my third attempt., last 2 were larger. This guy ate some lrf already so fingers crossed.
