New Hydor pump

I got mine (2 ea. #3) from Premium Aquatics , but at the time of this post they were sold out. Hopefully they'll get some more in soon and unless they raise their prices, all the sizes are an average of $10 less than DocF&S.

I was told that more would arrive at the end of March, so this seems to be the same for everyone.

DrF&S are not the only ones with the higher prices. I can't recall which online retailer I saw had them for the same price. F&S had them on sale so they were pretty much the same price anyway. Not sure if that still stands.

OK,

I got my Taam Seio Electronic Controller and the Koralia 4's seem to be doing just fine on it.

How do I tell if it is actually cycling? It is supposed to be running one pump at 100% as it is ramping the other down to 50%, and then cycling, right? How do I tell this is happening?

The instructions were very sparse and, as far as I can tell, there is no way to tell if it is actually doing what it is supposed to.

Is a voltage meter the only way to tell?

The Seio controller does not alternate, both pumps go up and down at he same time.

So more like a surge than an alternating wave...
still just as good as a wave except it's rotating the water from back to front and top to bottom rather than side to side.

there are a few others sites that are cheaper then F&S.

Thanks for that info, I thought they alternated as well.

37 gallon mixed reef

37 gallon mixed reef

Guys,

Just finishing up setting up my first tank, It's a 37 gallon tank. Right now I have nothing in it but the cleaning crew.. Thinking about buying some of the Hydro's.. I am planning on keeping some softies, bunch of zoas, Xenia, and/or a frogspawn, anchor or bubble coral..

What size, and how many of the Hydro's should I get? I can get two 2's and get 32x turnover rate.. or I can get two 3's and get 46x. The three's seem to be a bit much, to me. I thought that the optimal turnover rate is ~30-35..??

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks
Tim

Not sure if this will help, but I had ordered 2 3s for my 75. I already had a 1 in it. Well while they were backordered I decided to change my order to 2 4s instead even though I was afraid it might be too much. Got the 4s in last week and definitely glad I went with the larger ones instead. The current really is dispersed well and is not overpowering. I have a Galaxy, Gonoporea, Devils Hand, and Green Star Polyps. I have never seen them look as happy as with the addition of the 4s.

With my return pump I'm getting a turnover of about 48x.

PA is now charging 59.99 for the 4's......just like everyone else now and i trust that the price has now gone up.

Okay, if they really do push that broad of a flow, then I am going to go with the two 3's. I think that should be more than enough, with the addition of possibly a fuge overlow coming as well.

If their is too much flow though a controller can be used to turn one or both of them down a bit correct?

Thanks

FWIW
I put 2 3's in my 90 gal(should be same size tank) and was very happy with the flow. I bought a third one and ended up not using it.
I sent the three back for the recall and can't wait to get the new ones back from Hydor.
Hope this helps you.

How do you have them facing in the tank?...

i got a 4 in my 30 gal. I don't really like the flow pattern. I'm not sure if all prop pumps work like this but the flow comes out only in 2 streams in a v shape.

Do tunzes have flow just like this?

Mine is a 75 with a corner overflow. I have the K1 mounted midway down the back next to the overflow facing forward and slightly toward the corner. One K4 is in the opposite corner mounted midway down the back pointed diagonally across the tank and slightly upward. The second K4 is mounted about 5 - 6 inches to the right of the K1 pointing forward and slightly to the right. This has it pointing into a sort of 'canyon' I created with my rockwork. My return pump is also split with one outlet blowing straight across the back of the tank and the other blowing toward the front glass and slightly downward from the overflow.

I know a pic would be better but I still haven't broken down to get another camera yet. Been putting all the dough into the tanks :D

Be carefull with the controller though. It is possible that a fish would get tempted to hide in the ph when the ph is off. That is if your controller totally shutdown the ph.

I received my replacement Koralia #3. First appearance from the outside, it looks the same. On the inside it now has a ceramic shaft. Probably a good thing. Next, the body has two fins that look like they divert water flow. If memory serves me and my hand is any gauge, this new pump seems to flow more water then the old one. This maybe due to the new fins inside the body of the pump.

It is great to see Hydor included design improvements along with the motor fix.
