New Hydor pump

They continue to mislabel the K4 at 8.5W, when it is in fact a 12W motor and drawing 12W. I have seen K1 the motor was labeled 3.5W, are the K2 and K3 labeled correctly?

Thought this was a good place to post this.

I have 3 Koralia 3's. One of them is working only intermittently. It will stop working and then start again when jiggled around.
So, I contacted the Hydor Koralia people by email. Within the 1/2 hour I get a reply apologizing for the issue. Also, he explained that they never did figure out what was wrong with the 2's and 3's and the stray current issues but that they had re-engineered the pumps and the new ones have no such issues. He then requested that I send ALL 3 of my 3's to him in California for replacement with the new 3's. I emailed him back to ask the turnaround time and to thank him for the good service. Again, within 1/2 hour I get another reply. He tells me that they have been getting the replacements out within a day or 2 after receiving the problem pumps. I am sending mine out next week and don't expect anything less than what they have promised.
If all goes as it has so far, this company can't be beat for their customer support.

I keep reading good things about these p.h. & the company.

What would you guys suggest for my tank? I was thinking 2-#3's or #4's in each rear corner.
Standard 75g 48x18x21(22?), planning mixed reef, about 75lbs l.r., 120lbs aragamax sand, just about 500 gph flow from sump return.

& how are these working on the seio controller? Any more updates?

Thank you in adavnce,
Chris

I have 2 #4's in a 210ga..........on opposite sides of the tank pretty much pointing at each other (on a Seio Controller). I am very happy with the flow. Not too much, not too little.

I would think that 2 #4's in a 75ga would be too much. I would go with #3's.

Great power heads!!!

DarG,

they do just as they promised. I sent in my #3 and got back a #4 in a matter of a few days (the new #3's were not yet available).

Just found out on the Hydor site:

KORALIA1 400 gph 3.5 W
KORALIA2 600 gph 9 W
KORALIA3 850 gph 10 W
KORALIA4 1200 gph 12 W

I was actually afraid of the same thing but decided to give it a try anyway. I have a K1 and 2 K4s in a 75 with corner-flow. Getting about 608 gph through return and actually the tank has never looked better. I've got about 130-145 lbs of LR though and that may help diffuse the flow some as well. Getting very random water flow patterns. No controller for them, but I do have one of thee K4s turn off with my actinics so the flow isn't as much at night.

Two K3s proved too much in a mixed 75 for me but that was primarily due to previous coral placement. If I were to rearange the corals I could have made it work but it wasn't worth it. K3 + K1 worked great though.

Any updates on how these pumps are doing on the Seio controller?

Anyone got pics of more than 1 pump model side-by-side for size comparison?

I emailed them about the recall for my #3 and they told me to return it to where I bought it, a few weeks later a new one showed up at my door. They switched to a ceramic shaft and the motor looks different when comparing them, great company in my book

I called the guy at Hydor. He was great to talk too, had me send him back the motors of the #3's and 3 days later had the new ones at my door. No questions asked. He should sell more stuff with such good buisness sense. He would be a popular site.

Ok, 27 pages later... does anyone have a pic of the size difference between the k1,k4 and tunze 6025? I have a 72 and I was thinking about getting 2 k1's or 2 6025. The k3 and k4's seem like overkill for all my hammers.

I was thinking of putting one in each rear corner of my tank and aiming them down slightly and angle them towards the front of the tank at like a 45 degree angle (so the flow meets in the middle on the front of the tank)...would this work? I have my MJ900's aimed like that now and it seems to evenly disperse the flow throughout the tank as well as keeps detritus kicked up off my substrate.

If you have a crushed coral or larger (4mm) aragonite substrate you will probably be OK; if you have a finer sandbed (oolitic or 'sugar grained' sand) you cant point them downward or you will have a sand "blizzard"!

In my 125 I finally got my (3) #4s to where they won't blow the sandbed away, but if you look at my tank the entire sandbed has wavy 'dunes' in it that look like the ones in the Sahara desert :)

I might try two #2 Koralias. Remember, these are flow pumps, not stream pumps like the traditional powerhead. Yes, they move a lot of water, but the pressure is low for the amount of water movement.

The K pumps are prop pumps, sometimes also called stream pumps, the word comes from Tunze Streams which were some of the earliest propeller pumps. The traditional powerheads use impellers.

I was at the Hydor office picking up some replacement parts, talked to a very nice man Bruce. He showed me a prototype of a upcoming nano K pump the size of an AAA egg, rated 3.5W and 265gph.

He also said a more powerful K pump will be available soon, about the same size of K4 but more flow. Hydor is also working on controllers for K pumps to be available by the end of the year.

Below is a picture of a Nanostream 6025 (a wider DIY nozzle is put on which is wider than the standard nozzle but 1/3" shorter), and the K4 pump:

I am trying to decide between K3's and K4's for my 150

No SPS or anything just fish and softies.
Have either been thinking about mounting them on the bacl wall corners by the overflows or on the sides facing each other.

Anyone have thoughts on placement as well as should I go with the 3's or 4's? Didn't want a sandstorm or overkill with the 4's....
