New Hydor pump

Bozack, tough decision.......

I have the 2 K4s in a 210 and probably could use one more but I am definitely getting water movement.

I guess it all depends on the dimensions of your tank. I am assuming 48" long??? Seems to me that if you do mount in the back corners facing out diagonally, you could place just under the surface (4") and get a lot of flow without the sandstorm.

Tough call........

Koralia 2 and 3 are the same size, smaller than the 4, still larger than the 6025 because of length. My 3's were sent in for the recall thing so I dont have one to make direct comparison. But the 2's and 3's are the same size. The 4 is larger. I would say that they are between the 6025 and the 4 in size but closer to the 4 than the nano. The Koralia 1 is smaller and close in size to the 6025 but since it is egg shaped, it's still longer. The 1 is 2-1/4" X 5" . The 2 and 3 are 2-7/8 x 5-7/8 and the 4 is 3-1/4" X 6-1/4". The 6025 is about 2-3/4" and the water outlet probably sticks out about 1" or so but it's much smaller relative to the front of the Koralias.

My tank is actually 6 feet long, only reason I was thinking back by the oveflows as opposed to facing each other was to keep the wires more hidden.

Was kind og leaning towards the K3
s just to be safe.

My 125g is also 6 ft long... I have 1 in each front corner, and the 3rd unit in the middle, on the back glass... I put the 2 end ones on the side glass, in front, pointing diagonally to the opposite end rear corner.

In my case, I have a 3/4" plenum setup with 3" coarser-grained aragonite, then screening, then 2" sugar-grained oolitic sand on top... originally, with all 3 units on the rear glass, pointing diagonally forward, the Koralia's kept rearranging the sugar-grained oolite in the front of the tank, forming "dunes" in some spots, "blowing" down all the way to the screening in others. It wasn't a "blizzard" of sand; rather, I would have the sand the way I wanted it, but by the next morning the tank was crystal clear - but the sand was all rearranged... Placing the 2 end Koralias pointing to the back glass allows the flow to be broken up and redirected by the LR along the back of the tank, preventing too much rearranging of the sand...

Even though you don't have any hard corals now, I would still go with the #4s as you may want the extra flow in the future. I have a clam midway between 2 of the Koralias (they don't like high flow, either) and it seems quite "happy" there, out of the main flow areas...

P.S. - even with the 2 Koralias neear the front glass, wiring doesn't show much at all, and the units themselves don't distract from the look of the tank at all... I wouldn't worry about that :)

Thanks Carlso for some good advice.

If the 4's are "too much" I can always angle them more and disrupt the flow with their outputs from my closed loop I guess.

Guess it is the 4's as it sounds like you can never have enough flow from reading other's posting.

Ok....

Which Koralias did people put in their 4' x 2' x 2' 120's?

I have oolithic sand and SPS corals.

Thanks!

With a 120 and SPS I would go with 4s... you may have to just experiment with placement to avoid disturbing the sandbed too much

I've got a pair of K 4's in my 75 with 1 inch of oolitic sand. There is a lot of movement and very little sand disturbance(now). I had to play with it for the best angles but its working good now. Glad I went with 4's and not 3's.

Thanks guys....

Someone esle was telling me to go with #2's. I thought that was a little to weak and I've still not seen these in person yet.

So how many then? I have a 2 MJ Mods (600 and 1200) and a few regular MJ's but can replace those for consitent appearence.

I have 3 #3's on my 75 and man does it put out some great flow. Its extreamly spread out and can be postioned exactly the way you want with the ball and stem that its on. No noise or heat.

Which koralia should I get?

Which koralia should I get?

I was kinda surprized by the amount of flow some people are wanting.

We are starting a new aquarium and are planning on doing mostly soft corals. We plan on having 2 small clowns and maybe one more smallish fish.

I originally was thinking about getting two K1s but now I am not sure. It seems like very few people are getting the K1s. We have a 37 gallon tank which is on the tall side... its base dimension is 30x12.

It seems to me that two K1s would give us 800gph/37g=21.6 changes per hour. Is this enough for a decent selection of soft corals? Is this too much for two small clowns to feel happy? What sort of rules of thumb are there for water turn over rates for various setups... for example fish-only, mixed, soft corals only, hard corals, etc.

Thanks by the way.. I was about to drop the money down on the Tunze's but this seems like a much more reasonable deal.

I don't think there is any set formula but there are a couple of things to think about. Think about the fact that there are lots of different corals with lots of different flow (and light) needs. There are lots of different configurations and ways to set up the powerheads to create different flow patterns to accommodate the different species in one tank and the thing I think about most is their natural environment. There are not many spots on the reef that does not have decent flow.

Jacmyoung mentioned that hydor is working on a new controller and a more powerful version of the K4 pump. Anybody have more info on these?

I have two K2's that I bought earlier this year. Today, I discovered one was shorting out/leaking stray voltage into the aquarium. I felt a faint tingle on the far side of the tank and determined it was stronger over by my K2's....

Not really happy with that. I doubt seriously if its covered under the recall.....if it is, I'll try a replacement. If not, I'm done with these.

The water movement was nice IMO, but not at the risk of my, or my tanks health.
