New Kellogi's---feeding question

these guys are about as long as your pinky and very thankfully have been taking frozen brine.

we've been feeding them the hikari vitamin enriched. I am not sure if they will be able to handle the mysis (size-wise) yet. Will the vit enriched be okay for now? any other suggestions?

Chop up the mysis so they are smaller. Brine is harder for seahorses to digest so they don't get the same amount of protein out of it. Mysis will be better.

Where did you get the kelloggi fry?

lol, never thought to chop up the brine. but sorry, i think her source is secret. lol, thanks for the tip

Brad,

Love your signature, it is tatood on my right arm in ancient latin runes, but it means, no one messes with me with impunity, thats the impune bit.

ah, i was just going with what the tour guide told us...and technically means the same thing - impunity means without punishment, or unpunished...from www.dictionary.com

im·pu·ni·ty (ĭm-pyôô'nĭ-tç) Pronunciation Key
n. pl. im·pu·ni·ties
Exemption from punishment, penalty, or harm.

[Latin impûnitâs, from impûne, without punishment : in-, not; see in-1 + poena, penalty (from Greek poinç; see kwei-1 in Indo-European roots).]

i'm not being a p.i.t.a. just clarifying...potato potahto... we're basically saying the exact same thing anyway..... love that you have that as a tattoo though, i had considered it

lol...and i didn't notice until someone else pointed that out....bonus points right?

anyways, we found smaller frozen mysis labeled as "mini mysis" and they loved it......i am SO glad i didnt have to resort to cutting the mysis in half.....lol

I'm not asking cuz I'm interested in getting some. I'm asking because of the influx of kelloggi that have been imported to the U.S. that are testing positive for parasites which is leading to very premature deaths, even when cared for by PHD Marine biologists and seahorse breeding facilities.

I was specifically wondering if you had tested them for such parasites, treated them, and found a treatment besides prazipro which some of the parasites have shown resistance to.

I was just kinda hoping you had.

I'm trying to help you not loose your animals, not push in on any business venture. Kelloggi aren't really my thing, I like stripes.

FWIW I'll take your word for it they are kelloggi. Many of the animals being sold under that name, are not.

Please don't take this as being adversarial. I don't mean it as such. I'm just trying to open conversation.

no worries, i meant absolutely nothing by it. and now you have my attention...lol...let me see what i can answer for you.....

they came in under this name from the wholesaler

it has only been a little over a week but we have only lost one. they all have taken frozen foods since day one, so possibly CB?

i'm totally interested in everything you had to say, see my career? zoology major...lol

as far as the parasites, got any info on them and what i should be looking for? (symptoms, time of onset...)

thanks for the info!

Would be nice to know if they are from ORA. IME most wholesalers don't like to talk about that kinda stuff though.

Many of the seahorses being imported are raised in ocen pens. Over the past year or two we have seen a large number of these seahorses experience problems.

Common symptoms are stringy white poop, and the loss of weight or the inability to gain weight.

The parasites usually present themselves in the intestinal wall, gas bladder, and gills. Once they are established it is often hard to rid a seahorse of them.

With parasites there is never an exact time line, but IMO, since you do not know the origin of the seahorses I would prophylatically treat them for parasites. It's not an antibiotic so it is fairly safe and will not have future risks. It's something we suggest doing with all WC seahorses.

I'd do a 10 minute fresh water dip matching pH, and temp. Easiest way IME is to do it in a 5g bucket or so. I add an airstone and something for the seahorse to hitch to. If the seahorse lays on the bottom of the bucket, and looks like it is in distress, I would discontinue the treatment. If the seahorse is thrashing about, but not laying flat, keep it going. It's kinda painful to watch.

I'd follow with a round of treatments of Praziquantel.

Since your a science teacher you probably have a microscope? You can take slides of there poop to look for the parasites. They are quite disgusting looking. ;)

There is some experimenting with some other medications going on to see of there are some that are more effective against particular parasites that seem to be more resistant to the praziquantel. Right now we're kinda stuck there.

Pledo, what about doing a round of metronidizole and a round of fenbendizole in addition to the praziquanatel? Just to cover more bases.

I am doubting a CB source, since I don't think any, including ORA, ship seahorses labelled kelloggi. Eating frozen is not a guarantee of CB, many pen-raised and even WC will take frozen from the get-go.

Brad, if you can get us a good profile shot of the SH, we can try to tell you what species you really have. IME, I haven't seen any seahorses lately labelled "kelloggi" that are actually kelloggi. More likely kuda, reidi, or a hybrid.

i will do my best, anything in particular you're going to look at that i should focus on? I still have the one that didn't make it, would you be able to tell from pics of a dried one?

the coronet, but other features are important as well. a good side view will be sufficient. dried may work, but live is probably better. Can you post both?

Hopefully this is enough, the ones in my tank are in a specimen cup so its hard to get a clear shot, but i can try so let me know

i would be happier with the kuda. I tried to count the tail rings and that suggested kuda. but they're so tiny so who knows.

Very good suggestion on the meds. That might work.

I don't know of anyone who has received a true Kelloggi yet. I believe it was ORA who was importing the net pen ones, but not sure, I don't think they divulge the info either. Such a strange thing because they are breeding some species at there facility as well. If they would reveal which is which I believe they could get more business.

I suck at IDing juvies. I am so horrible at it I will not even attempt it. Kelloggi are part of the Kuda complex though so makes sense they would resemble them.

Just curious, what did you attribute the cause of death of the first one to? How long did you keep it?

If you were a zoology major you might not be squemish. You could always necropsy the dead seahorses, culture bacteria, open up the gas bladder, gills, and intestinal tract and look for signs of parasites. Personally, I couldn't stomach it.

Although if you can ID what strain of vibrio the seahorses are carrying you could actually make a vaccine for it. Another member here who is a seahorse keeper, and a pathologist has done so with succsess. Again, something that is beyond my skillz, but I have read all about it and seen the pics. :D

I second the Kuda ID. Very cute. Good luck with them.
I would suggest you also have neomycin and triple sulfa on hand just in case.

Angie

ok, i think i've seen that around....thanks! can i ask what is making you guys say kuda vs kelloggi?
