Just got a mag about 6 days ago. So far a very scary road with ups and downs. Started with a special order from my lfs. Got home and this thing is very nice and very big. Deflated then reinflated the deflated again. Read a lot of stories about deflating and why. Got me very nervous. Lighting is natural sunlight with led supplement. By far I'm not out of the woods. But this thing is eatting and looking very healthy now. But here is some pictures for your enjoyment.

Only did it once. Lasted about 30 mins. Bad or good? Also still deflated but staying inflated more. Looks like expelling water then refills after I fed some silversides. Looks horrible but takes about 8 hours to complete the process. Normal or am I in trouble. Seems to be adjusting nicely but I know how sensitive these guys are and I want to make sure it survives the first month. After that should be stay healthy for the most part. Will it be OK with an anemone crab always hanging near its base. Having phosphate no higher then .25 harmful? Did see a spike once with trying to acclaimate the nem to the sunlight.

These guys are very sensitive. Make sure you monitor it closely over the next "x" amount of time. Yours is quite beautiful! :) Although I don't quite like reading .25 phosphate, let's hope the test was wrong... We would want it to be 0.01 - 0.00 ;) .25 is quite high  Either way make sure you've done your reading... It would be ashame to lose it. Keep us updated on how it's going! :)

My API test for phosphate card is 0.0 then jumps to 0.25. So the color scale is on the lighter side of .25. So I assume its .25. But how harmful is .25. My phosphate might be getting fueled by the natural sunlight. But I don't want to cut back any time for light since these mag needs good lighting and lots of it. So should I cut back the sunlight?

Just snap this with my phone bathing is sunlight

One more pic. Sorry for the picture spamming. This is from the test just taken 15 mins ago.

Is that test kit old or fairly new? Always check to make sure the chems haven't expired ;) He sure looks happy. Just keep doing what you're doing and make sure you preform your large water changes every so often. If it's that high now, it would be wise to do a large wc soon. Water changes are your best friend, especially in keeping a H. Mag :) Keep us updated! :)

Test kit is new with an exp date of 3/2013. I do test every day sometimes twice a date since the mag arrived. In one week I did 2 wc. Every time the mag expells water after 8 hours of being fed I change 20% water the next day. Feed on day 3 and 5. I read that you shouldnt feed an acclimating nem but I believe they should eat asap. But that's just me. Will keep the updates.

As far as those API test kits go, don't get too worked up about it when it comes to getting readings around 0. Most of the time it's impossible to get the color that it indicates as 0 anything. If it's between the 0 color and the next highest up color you can just assume that it's trace levels. Shouldn't be harming anything.

The "balling" for 30 minutes is fine. Mine does it every night. The deflating for 8 hours could be better. Mine had stopped deflating after about 2 weeks except laying it's oral disc down every now and then. I would have to suggest you try something other than silversides. A lot of people have lost anemones due to bad batches of silversides, and thusly will never use them for anemones again.

Phosphates above .10 are enough to **** off a new anemone. I'd work on getting an exact measurement if you can. Hanna makes a $40 PO4 meter that gets VERY specific, so that would work. If your phosphates are high, you can't bring them down by cutting back on light. PO4 gets in the tank from your food sources most of the time. There only 3 ways to bring the levels down. Feed less, more water changes, or GFO. GFO works like carbon and pulls the phosphates out of the water as it passes through.

Will work on getting gfo in a reactor tomorrow. Thanks for the tips. I do see the deflating less and less as the days go. I will mix in raw shrimp and other fresh seafood. After a month of setting in I will start slowing the feedng time to once a week. Until then 2-3 times a week should be good. Any tips on clowns behavior to watch out for? Doesn't seem like the nem is bothered too much and the clown seem to help the nem remove the sand grain black stuff from the nem at times. I think its waste and algae that the nem just process.

Your clowns should be fine. It sounds like they're just taking care of their host.

One thing I feel compelled to mention is that a healthy unbleached anemone shouldn't need so many feedings if your lighting is adequate. I feed mine less when it is feeling ill. Currently I feed mine once a week and it inflates more than average the day after each feeding. I would be concerned if yours deflates for a couple hours after every feeding. There is nothing wrong with feeding it 2-3 times a week normally, but you shouldn't NEED to, and if it is reacting poorly, you may want to skip a few feedings and see if the deflating stops. Just my 2 cents...

I will stop the feeding and see if the deflating stop. Just got two reactors and will be daisy chaining both. First one will run gfo into the second reactor running carbon. Any issues?
