You got that right! I am tempted to make some sort of sculpture out of marine putty and let it get encrusted by this stuff. Perhaps a skull!

I don't know about an obama head but an easter island head could be interesting!
Actually if you look at the last pic it looks alot like an octopus all I have to do is add some putty tenticles!

I think there is a guy in south Florida that has grown his meteor shower over a statue of Jesus and other things. Once they start growing they don't stop. Also when you mount to a rock it will spread quicker if you use putty around the areas that are raised up and not touching the rock. When the coral has to grown downwards it might not get as much light in that area and it will slow down.
