New Neptune Apex already obsolete

Watching the new BRS tv about the new Vertex controller. Why would anyone buy the new Apex? Given the cost us supposed to be competitive with the Apex.....it's game over

Time to cancel those preorders folks lol

i'm sure it's a fantastic controller but i have no idea how i would mount that bad boy. it reminds me of the battery from my atv only it has a touchscreen lol. i never use the display on my apex other than to start the feed cycle.

Kurt,

When they first released info regarding the Cerebra over 4 years ago I think most people felt the same as you do now, that this will be the latest and greatest controller on the market.

Then came all of the failed launches and promises. That is what scares me the most.

Today is June 12th. They said it will be releasing on June 20th world wide and we will be able to purchase great pre-sale packages and more info will be released. They said that at the beginning of the month.

I don't think they are quite ready to take over the market. They should have released more info already, package prices and what not.

We will see. I hope it is a great product because as much as I love my Apex, Neptune Systems does need some good competition to keep raising the bar for us.

Aw please. Vertex customer service sucks. They had some half *** unveiling so far. Apex has been in the controller biz for decades. Technology evolves, the new system rocks. I lost money too, bought a new system 2 months before the new one was announced...so what, we gotta stick to the latest. Apple just announced new mac books coming soon. They dont seem to give a rats *** about who bought the latest today, already obsolete. The new apex will work with previous modukes and EB's. So far Vertex has given us no proof that controller is worth anything, why would one want to compare it to an Apex already?

Vertex is rediculously over priced.

I'll be shocked if that controller comes in under 2k.

For the record, I have an Apex myself, and I dont plan to upgrade to the Vertex, even if it is amazing, at least not on this tank. I am a programmer by trade, so I dont have any real issues with the programming side of things, but I can see how MANY would. That being said, assuming the price point was similar, and I didnt have a controller already, I dont think it would be much of a comparison.

My only concern is why they decided to have a native display?!?!? They should have just developed a really nice app, and allow people to use their own phones. I mean who the hell doesnt have a smartphone this day and age? First it would have made it far cheaper, second, it would make it much less bulky.

I think the display sales for the new system will drop tons. Nobody will be paying $120 for the same old display that basicaly does nothing. Neptune probably felt this coming and offered the new system without one so we could choose one that would work better and be cheaper. Im ordering Amazon's Fire at $49. It is in color, wi fi and will allow me to follow the tank through Fusion.

You could do as you stated stick to your phone, as many at this point dont even look at their displays really.

I think having pre-set uses for controller functions, like the Cerebra does narrows the capacity of it. Im just saying without knowing the system, since we know little about it at this time.

Being able to throw in your desired codes have its drawbacks, but allow for you to really do what is best for your system dialed in as you wish.

Have you all seen the new Tunze 7000 controller? I think for the money that one seems very promising.

I did, but had a weak coverage at Interzoo. I like the module capacity Neptune has, allowing one to expand as needed. I dont have Neptunes name tattooed on my *** by any means, but i feel that company seem to be releasing products according to what customers need. Terrence is participative in forums, and i believe he brings these customer thoughts into the company's decision plans.

Tunze came out with the most hideous, odd shapped pump, when the market strives for small footprint, broad flow. What was that about? Tunze has always gotten us top quality stuff, but im kind of sketchy about their latest stuff.

Neptunes ATO, return, doser, wavs are of excellent quality and IMO they have the upper hand in controllers at this point in time

I gotta say I wasn't all that impressed by the BRS review. I have not bought one for my new 120 I'm working on... but at this point I'd still be going with the Apex. The power bars looked horrible, I know it was beta.. but if they are anything like that in production... I'd have to say no.

Plus.. I'm not a huge fan of the coding aspect of the Apex.. but I'd rather have to code and have complete control to do whatever I want/need as opposed to not being able to write code and being forced to only have the functions that they say I want/need.

As stated above that thing is a MONSTER. Maybe time will tell if the production model is more sleek and small. I barely have room for my apex in my stand let alone a beefcake like that!...

It was large, I will grant you that. But most people can't or won't learn how to config an apex...the simplicity is a huge selling point. Not one that will have ME running out to replace my Apex, but it likely will be huge selling point for someone less technical

I'd say that all of this is given that the system actually works properly. I work in the IT Industry and ... well ... a lot of stuff that comes out version 1... we don't touch for a good amount of time.

For instance when a new MS operating system comes out.. we don't touch it till Service Pack 1 at least... let others figure out the issues and bugs before we even touch it.

This is one thing that would keep me from using this for at least a year. Let people figure out if it works.. has bugs.. does what is supposed to.

On the other hand .. APEX has been around a long time and many many people use it and we know it works.

I realize as someone that's more technically adept than the average person, it changes my view of Apex and the perceived difficulty of setting things up. What I can't understand though is this hobby really caters to people that are more technically adept than not. Is there really such a barrier to controllers like the Apex due to complexity and less hand-holding, or is the true barrier the costs involved?

What I mean by that is these tanks aren't like their freshwater cousins where you just fill it up, put on a filter, stock it and feed. There are a lot of extra technical parts to keep things going, especially when you introduce corals into the equation. Lighting, water movement, chemistry testing, filtration, preparation, feeding, element dosing, the list goes on and on. Almost every part of that requires something other than just pushing one button or guessing. I just don't see the 'too difficult' aspect being such an issue when keeping a tank successfully running for years is at a high enough degree of difficulty already.

The Apex is not difficult to setup or configure anymore with fusion..

This was true 3+ years ago. Now with Apex Fusion everything is so simple that anyone can get their system up and running.

On the classic dashboard where it was more coding involved I would agree with you, but with Fusion it is practically plug and play.

It has a simple user interface and for more advanced users you can use your own coding which is a great feature.

vertex replacing Neptune? no way!!! last month my $500, 4 year old Vertex Calcuim reactor burned through the impellar, a $15 part. Vertex told me they do not have parts for that reactor and to buy their new reactor. You can imagine i was upset. Knowing they didn't make the pump and with the help of albert at Aqua Cave, i found the replacement impellar for $15. i don't care how great vertex's new controller is, with service like that i will never buy another vertex product!!!

I think the new Vertex display mounted flush with your cabinet would look sexy as heck...

Plus it looks like an aquarium controller - and not a cheap Fisher-Price knock off.

That being said - Vertex customer service is virtually non-existent - which will hurt sales a lot.

Not clear how it renders the apex obsolete. Pretty sure it'll continue to work just as it always has.
