New NHL Rules OT

I agree that the Avs need to do everything they can to resign both these players. I LOVE Forsberg. I sat at an Avs game and watched him skate up and down the ice during a penalty kill for at least a full minute and no one on the other team could get him off the puck and they were getting sooo frustrated and the whole audience was on their feet cheering. Well, it was an amazing display of skill. From what I am reading (and folks, if you love hockey, get the Canadian online sports articles) the Avs will have a very hard time keeping under the cap and everyone is assuming that the Avs can't sign both. By not signing Forsberg they leave themselves alot more wiggle room than by signing Foote and they still have Hejduk, Tanguay and others on the team. I am not sure when Blakes contract is up or Sakic's but it is going to be verrrry interesting to see who we can hold and who must be sacrificed. The days of the Avs signing all these players is over as it is for the Dead Things and the Rangers (proof that money does NOT buy happiness or Cups). I am sooo stoked for the season to begin. I love that there will be more interdivisional play. I can't wait for the 1st game against Vancouver when Bertuzzi is playing again. (Hope that one is here!) I am anxious to see how much scoring improves and if the new rules really let the stars be stars. Heck, I miss the goofy Canadian commercials you get to see when you watch 2 Canadian teams play on NHL Center Ice. They are hysterical. The one thing I will not do for at least 1 year is pay to go to an NHL game. My personal protest for both sides not getting it done in time for a season last year. We went to 14 games the year before. I blame both sides and hope they kiss my "you know what" for a long time to get me back. (I am sure they will not miss my absence one bit.)
I will watch every game on TV, though. I can't help it, I'm weak.
Good thread,

Brian,
Keep posting OT topics. I love to talk about reefs but I also like to talk about other stuff. I guess if I attended a COReefer meeting we could not talk about anything other than reefs. . Sounds like a fun meeting

I heard about the new rules but did not have a detailed account. Thank you for the update. Wouldn't you want to keep Forsberg over Sakic? I know Sakic is a great leader but he is older than Forsberg. Forsberg I believe is better too.

The new rules should make the game more exciting and interesting. I especially like the fact that the goalie has a restricted amount of ice they can venture out into. This will stop them from playing interference when a team dumps the puck.

Just finished reading the Sunday Post and they have several good articles about the new rules and how it affects the Avs. I think Sakic is contracted for 1 more year? He is the Captain and leader and he has scored an average of a point a game. Forsberg can't make that claim. Forsberg hasn't had an injury free year since 95-96. On the other hand, if we trade Hejduk or Tanguay, we could keep Forsberg. If we trade Hejduk or Tanguay, we can get something in return (draft picks, etc.) But we are trading away youth. Sakic is 36. Forsberg is 32 but if he is let go, we get nothing in return. The new rules "should" allow offensive players to really shine which can favor keeping the younger, talented players over aging ones. I do not envy Lacroix at all and we WILL be looking at a different Avs team and different type of play. The Post makes the point of Foote being 34 and a stay at home defensiveman in a new NHL that has freewheeling skaters being allowed the 2 line pass. How about Blake? Will defense still win championships?
The new "goalie wandering" rules. I wish they would just let them wander but if they leave a certain radius from their net, they can get checked off the puck just like anyone else. Then, Martin Brodeur can wander all he wants but would have to think twice before doing so. Plus it is very entertaining to see goalies get hit! hey! they're hockey players, too, aye? (use Canadian accent here)

I love you Patty, great info.
Sakic -vs- Forsberg, hmmm.
Forsberg will never score a point a game but I think he is responable for more goals happening than any other player. NOT FACT just my opinion. He opens up so much for the other players to do their stuff. How many times have we seen 2 and 3 guys go after Forsberg, he skates around with them hanging on and he make a great pass for a score. Sakic will always be a better scorer but I don't think he improves the players around him nearly as much as Forsberg does. And if?????????? they limit the clutching and grabbing crap, how good does 21 become and may acutally play 90% of a season or two.

I would rather have Forsberg over Sakic. I just couldn't watch Forsberg play his game against us. Sakic is more like a Modano or Hull. I never really notice him until he scores. I alway watch 21 when ever he is on the ice.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have them both.

More OT threads to come until somebody like John or Jerry ask me to stop.

Thx for the nice condensed version of the rules as they are now. Haven't had time to follow due too many obligations. Now my Panthers just need to draft and trade better.

A Panther fan in NY? I remember "no more rats" verrrry well. Everyone will need to draft and trade smarter. Since even the 4th liners will make 450 thousand a year (new minimum) will that force more ice time on the 1st liners (who are all earning less moola) and/or make sure that 4th liners can actually produce something. Remember, they can now officially get rid of any goons because there is NO MORE CLUTCHING AND GRABBING and the instigator rule! I really do finally see the death of any players who sole ability on the ice is to fight on skates. I do not think that fighting is over. It is one of the features of hockey that make it what it is... basketball could use some of it. OK, that is another OT.
Brian, I wince in pain at the thought of Forsberg skating for anyone else. His name was my 1st Jersey. I agree that he creates more chances than any other player. His creativity is what makes him soooo valuable. It may be wrong but I was hoping he would retire from the NHL for good so we wouldn't have to even face that possibility. Personally, I would keep Forsberg over Sakic, Sakic over Hejduk, and Hejduk over Tanguay. But I am being very emotional in my choices. And I named my dog Alex! I think the final decision will depend more on what type of team they want to put together. Youth vs. Proven skill? Older players aren't such a liability if they have more room to skate and can cherry pick well. BTW, the list of available free agents is going to be tempting, too. Amonte and Leclair are available. I wouldn't really be tempted by either of them but what if you could get them for 1.5 mil? Who else is going to be available in the next few days. All these free agents need deciding by Aug 1st!!!! OMG.
I love this game.

Yeah. When Beezer wound up in Fl I got interested in hockey again and became a fan of theirs. When the Islanders and Rangers both lost their commitment and hearts to placing good teams on the ice I backed away from hockey for awhile.

What about the Sabres? They have heart. No talent, but heart! I miss Beezer... He was fun to beat!
Hey Hockey folks, who else do you like to follow? What is the order of players (keep 1st to last) that you want the Avs to do? Forsberg, Foote, Sakic, Hejduk, Tanguay, Blake, Abeschier (sp) (he's up for renewal, too). This is my 500th post so I will end here.

At least we have the AHL RiverRats as opposed to the Sabres. Even my ols mgr who was from Buffalo gave up on them. Ownership killed them.

Brian

I would say to move Sakic and Tanguay, then try to get Drury back to play with Forsberg and Hejduk. Keep Foote and Blake. Not sure about Abby.
It's really hard, feel like a kid in candy store, I want this and that.
Brian

I think Tanguay is a kid with a TON of potential, I would hate to see him go.

I think Foresburg almost always leads the leauge in assists, but would have to check my facts on that. And besides, I love the guy.

Sakic would be really hard to lose for morale reasons in addition to playing ability. He is the captain and a true team leader.

Hejduk is such a good all-around player...

OK, this is going to be really tough, I want to keep them all!

But we can't. It will put us way over on the cap.
So, who do you release or trade? Be the GM. Youth or beauty? 39 Million bucks in your pocket and a Cup at the end?

Brian, I was so upset when they traded Drury. That was the most painful trade for me since I have followed the AVs.

OK Patty, if I HAVE to decide... Tanguay, Hejduk, Foresburg, Blake, Sakic, Foote. I think Tanguay represents their future offensive strength, so it is very important to keep him. It pains me to put Foresburg in the middle instead of the top of the list, but with all of his injuries, can we afford to pay him if he doesn't play? Realisticly, should he be at the bottom of the list? Like you said, if he had retired, it would make the decision easier. I love Foote, but being so purely defensive might not make him as much of an asset in the "new" game. I just don't know where to put Abby on the list. It depends on so many other factors like who would they replace him with and at what cost. Overall, I feel comfortable with Lacroix's ability to maximize the salary cap and put the best team on the ice. IMO-He is the best GM in the business.

I agree. Lacroix is 'da man'. If anyone can put together a cup-worthy team, it is him. The papers today are guessing that Forsberg will be released. Remember, team chemistry is very important, too and we really don't know the locker room aspect of it. And we won a cup without Forsberg..... I think I will wind up in tears no matter what. Someone I love is going to go.... The wait will be over soon.

"Sakic or Rob Blake, scheduled to make $6.7 million and $6.4 million, respectively, next season. "

That's 1/3 of our cap. That just scares me. Now we need to field a team -2 for 26 mil. That makes it really hard.

Brian

Don't want to get in trouble for starting a new OT thread so I will add it here.;)

What do you guys think of Todd Bertuzzi only getting a 10 to 20 game suspension extension from the Moore hit. I thought he should be suspended for 1/2 to a full season after Moore skates his first NHL game. But that's just me.
Brian

I don't think hockey needs Bertuzzi back. But, I'm an Avs fan and I was really rooting for Moore. He played with a lot of heart while the rest of the team wasn't playing with much. Still, if Bertuzzi lost control, does hockey need a player who can lose control that badly? And if he didn't, does hockey need someone who will commit that act with pre-meditation? I was watching the game live and I'm still pretty shaken by how violent that act was.

As disgusted as I was with Bertuzzi's hit, I actually think the suspension is appropriate. The message has been sent. Bertuzzi won't be able to sneeze on anyone without a whistle and if he goons it up one more time, he will be out on his a** and he knows it. Having to play hockey and worrying about keeping your temper will make him a much worse player. I really think he will have a stinker of a year. He has alot of fan support in Vancouver as they feel he was standing up for the Moore hit on Nasland and even though Moore had already fought 2 other players in that game, Bert is the one that the fans feel still needed to "deliver a message". I truely think Bertuzzi did not intend to injure Moore to the extent that he did, but I DO think he intended to hurt him. It was a blind sided cheap shot and most players (on any team BUT Vancouver) will give Bertuzzi the sideways glances that let him know he crossed a line. Let him play. He will either hang himself for good, or worry about it so much that it stiffles his play. I can't wait to see Blake lay a butt-check into him and he will my young jedi, he will.....

Yeah but who will Blake be playing for;)
J\k

Those are good points Patty.

I don't think the NHL has any rules on suspensions, they seem to use a more cause and effect type rule. Somebody can do a really bad cross-check and if the player doesn't get hurt, it's no big deal. Then if is a boarder line hit but the player gets really hurt then it becomes a big deal. I like the thought of, if you do something really freaking stupid, it could cost you a career in the NHL. I think you are right about Bertuzzi, he is going to be skating on thin ice all year.:D But in 3 years if/when Moore is still messed up from that play and not able to play and Bertuzzi is skating around holding up Lord Stanley's Cup with MVP honors, how sick will that make you feel.
Brian

It was sickening to watch. I can't imagine that Bertuzzi was so stupid to think that with a cheap shot like that he would not cause significant injury, maybe not to the extent that it did, but you don't ram a hockey stick accross the back of someone's head and expect them to be "just fine". I think the coach should have been punished more, too. That smirky smile on his face after the play was just as sickening as the hit itself. I agree with Patty on the logic aspects, but my personal opinion from an emotional perspective is that I never want to see him on the ice again.
