New NHL Rules OT

The Avalanche have now struck out twice in free agency. The Flyers have signed Peter Forsberg to a two-year deal worth $10.7 million, less than a week after Adam Foote left Colorado for Columbus

Peter Forsberg's days in Denver are over.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced tonight they have signed the former Avalanche star to a free agent contract. A press conference is expected to take place Thursday announcing his addition to the Flyers, the team that originally drafted Forsberg.

Forsberg's departure from the Avs is the second major blow to the team this week. Adam Foote left for Columbus on Monday, but Forsberg's exit is the more shocking of the two.

Forsberg said he wanted to stay in Denver, but apparently the Avalanche could not make the economics work to keep him. Colorado already has more than $13 million committed to Joe Sakic and Rob Blake, and has little space under the league mandated salary cap of $39 million.

Forsberg was among the biggest current sports stars in Denver.

Forsberg could not be reached for comment today, and his agent, Don Baizley, did not return phone calls.

Forsberg's rookie card shows him in a Flyers jersey, but he was traded soon after to the Quebec Nordiques in a blockbuster deal for Eric Lindros. Apparently, Forsberg's career has now come full circle.

I'm sorry but I would much, much rather have Forsberg for 5.4 million instead of Sakic at 6.66 million. That just sucks.

That's a bad move and I am not happy. Not sure how I am going to tell Brandi this, she will not be happy. I think I will go sit down starts and sulk for a bit.

They are going with their youth. Philly is going with age. Peter went with the longer contract. Remember, he is 1 concussion away from being an Eric Lindross. We may never see him play in Denver again as we only play the East teams once every three years and most predict that Peter will only play 2 more years. I wish him the best and will catch him on Center Ice. He was amazing to watch play but I think the Av's are right to concentrate on their young talent. He would have cost too much to keep. It is now going to be interesting to see how Philly manages to stay under the cap. I believe they are going to have to trim some salaries to do so.
by the way, cup drops in 63 days.......

It's amazing how bad of a GM Lacroix is now that he has to deal with a salary cap. If we are going with a youth movement, why did he honor the contracts of Sakic & Blake. I know alot of people will disagree with me, but why in the hell didn't we trade Tanguay? He has to be the most inconsistent player on the team. I think the days of Stanley Cup Playoffs might be coming to an end. On the other hand, I won't miss Forsberg's injuries & his constant whining.

Your right about the jello head concerns and I guess it could be worse. He could have signed with the Nuks, Dallas or Detroit. But I am still not happy about it, maybe I will become a little bit of a Philly fan if I get the Center Ice package. Two months till Hockey starts, four months till the refs forget the new rules. I love your input Patty, it always helps me level out a bit.
Brian

He might do better than Tanguay without 21. Tanguay just doesn't seem to do much without 21 making plays for him. If all the rules are enforced like they say, I will have to re-evaluate all the players. Forsberg might not look as impressive without 12 guys hanging on him and somebody like Tanguay might be able to shine with the "new rules". We shall see. I would like us to re-sign Worrell (sp) just for the Nuks games.

Heres our lineup.

Tanguay-Sakic-Hejduk
Konowalchuk-Turgeon-Svatos
Laaksonen-McLean-Laperriere
Hahl-McCormick-Hinote

Blake-Vaananen
Brisebois-Skrastins
Sauer/Boughner-Liles

Aebischer
Budaj/Sauve

I really don' think it is
that bad.

Root for the name on the front of the jersey, not the back!

In Pierre I trust!

Avs21, Good signature. I can't help it, though, I will probably root for Forseburg (at least until the playoffs when he might play against the Avs).

Patty, now I might have to shell out the bucks for the Center Ice package (or come over to your house a lot  ).

Brian, I don't know if my husband knows yet, I know how you feel, I don't know how to break the news!

I stand corrected on the long vs short contact offers. We offered 4 years and Philly offered the 2year that Peter wanted. With the Avs offer, he would have made only 1.5 mill the 1st year and then increasing each of the next 3. Since he plans to only play 2 years, this was an insult to offer him only 1.5mil for this year. Sorry, I don't blame him for leaving with that kind of offer. That being said, I will miss him and will watch some Cryers er Flyers games just to see how he is doing.
Pierre T and Bresbois are just short term selections that would sign for about 1.5 to 2 mil. There is no heavy commitment in them. If they don't produce, they will be traded for a good 4th liner or some other area. Pierre might produce more than expected, he may not..... will watch on that one.
Christina, you can come watch Center Ice anytime.... There is always popcorn and plenty of expletives flying during hockey in our house and a game is almost always on....
62 days till the puck drops

Former Vancouver forward Brad May signed a two-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche on Friday

It's going to be hard to get used to this new team. I guess I got 60 days to learn everybody.

Hey Patty, have seen a price for Center Ice yet?

NHL games to be on Outdoor Life Network

NEW YORK (AP) - NHL games will air on Outdoor Life Network for at least the next two seasons.

The league finalized a two-year deal with Comcast Corp. - the owner of OLN - late Wednesday night after ESPN declined to match the agreement that will pay the NHL $65 million this season and $70 million in 2006-07.
The agreement between Comcast and the NHL was approved by the league's board of governors last week. ESPN, which resumed regular broadcast of NHL games in 1992, had until Wednesday night to match the contract but decided to pass.

"Over the years, thousands of great NHL moments were presented to our fans through the lenses of ESPN cameras," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. "ESPN was a supportive partner, and both the National Hockey League and ESPN enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship. We wish ESPN continued success."

The new deal can be extended up to six years. For the 2007-08 season, Comcast would pay the NHL $72.5 million but that number could go higher based on contingencies.

OLN, best known for providing live coverage of the Tour de France, will show between 58 and 78 regular-season games, as well as conference quarterfinals and the entire conference finals - with the exception of some weekend windows that could move games to NBC in both playoff rounds.

OLN will show Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup finals before NBC takes over for the remainder of the series.

The deal with Comcast goes beyond just television rights. Comcast will bring the NHL Network to cable systems in the United States, and provide on-demand game broadcasts and computer streaming of live games.

This is the second time in recent months that ESPN has declined a deal with the NHL. In June, ESPN passed on a $60 million option under the previous contract. The network tried to retain the rights for less money in talks with the league.

ESPN contended that the value of NHL games had dropped substantially following the lockout that wiped out all of last season.

"We worked very hard to build and sustain our relationship with the league and would have liked to continue," George Bodenheimer, the president of ESPN, Inc. and ABC Sports said in a statement late Wednesday night. "However, given the prolonged work stoppage and the league's TV ratings history, no financial model even remotely supports the contract terms offered. We wish the NHL all the best."

The NHL will begin a two-year deal with NBC for over-the-air broadcasts beginning with the upcoming season. That is a profit-sharing arrangement, a deal similar to what the network has with the Arena Football League and the National Lacrosse League in which it pays no rights fee to televise games.

Wow, I guess I am. Got an email that you had posted to it, B***n. How the heck are you. Forsberg was traded today to Nashville. Hmmmm, him and Paul Kariya on the same line... Expect them to go quite a ways in the playoffs. Avs on the other hand... I expect them to miss the playoffs for the 1st time since coming here. Sad that they have fallen so far so fast. What will be very interesting to Avs fan is what they do in the off season. Where will they spend some money and who do they trade?
