New Onyx Clowns

Finally got my new clowns. Bought them from Sustainable Aquatics. Rod's reef was out till late summer and I couldn't wait anymore. Paid a bit more for these but arrived very healthy and took to the ananome after the 1st night. Showing some good black already, hope they get all the stripes. Let me know what you all think.

i think they are old enough so that they should have more black on them to be selling them as onyx and for more money than rods.
otherwise

Very nice pair of percs :)

I agree with GSMguy. Those are not Onyx. With that much black at that size, IMO, they will unlikely will become Onyx.

I also thought they should have more black for their age when I was ordering from SA. Fortunately my order didn't go through lol. I ordered right when they got their online system up and things weren't working correctly.

I was going to buy a pair from them until i realized they arent onyx.. and their colors look a little bit faded..

There is nothing nicer than a bright orange onyx perc.. drools..

Is the price on the site for the pair? thats not more than rods if so. Some of rods have black like that at 8-10 months old & they still produce onyx eventually... they just take longer. Of course some never do, but only time will tell.

Here is our exceptional wild caught breeding pair of the "onyx" color form of Amphiprion percula. These are the parents of our exclusive "S.A. Onyx" variety. Color development requires about 18 months. The young pairs pictured in our catalog will achieve full coloration after a few months in your aquarium.
The juvenile fish take longer than A. ocellaris clownfish and even other A. percula clownfish to develop their stripes. It can take over a year to develop the dark black coloration between the bars.

This is from their website. The pair your juvis came from are "Onyx Percs". Speaking of Onyx.....
---------Rant on--------
Look you have to understand that "onyx" means next to nothing in the trade anymore. Its a title adopted in the mid nineties by a few vendors. The first place I remembered hearing it was from Inland Aquatic around 95ish, there are some who say it came from elsewhere.
At this point it means "I'm a true perc with black on me". You can adopt your definition but it's not a specie, its a color variant.
----------Rant Off---------

Enjoy your fish, they should grow up to have colors like their parents. Don't compare them to another perc's pairs progeny's development rate. Thats like comparing your kids to mine :).

Well, I didn't email them. Probably not worth the time or effort. Even if they aren't true onyx the main thing I was looking for was some nice black. If they develope close to their parents on the website I'll be happy.

Guess I'll be the guniea pig so everyone knows if you want true onyx these apparently aren't it. Can't really say they used me because I didn't ask the right questions. I will say they were very nice to order from and the fish arrived in great condition and were packaged well.
