NEW plumbing method for an ULTRA QUIET REEF TANK!!!! LONG !!!!

slammin, might try a Herbie with the primary drilled low and the emergency drilled high. Reefjunkie fr Canreef has a stacked Herbie though on a somewhat conventional overflow and seems to work.

Higher drain as suggested or an outside box that is plumped. An outside box might be better IMHO since with the limited area shown you could not replace a bulkhead if you needed to. You also might consider the false wall only at the top rather than covering the whole back side. Look at BeanAnimal design - it has a good picture of what I am discussing (3 holes rather than 2, but otherwise pretty close).

Does anyone have experience with this overflow system being used with a wavebox? I know that a wavebox results in surging flow into the overflow box, and my concern is that the primary standpipe would lose its siphon when the wave moves away from the overflow.

Hey everyone!! I wondered if anyone has photos of the full set up of Herbies Method. You know how the thread was started. I am unable to view the original pics for some reason.

Check my home page. I posted a video there of mine. Very simple and noise/maintenance free!

Swweeeet build Shaggss. Really nice system you got there and very professionally put together. NIce!!

I saw it looked like you used the sched 80 bulk heads from Bulk Reef Supply?? Did you have to drill bigger holes for those bulk heads??

Also when you filled the tank with water, at what point did you start to adjust the gate valve on the Herbie method for the water level? How long are the two drains in the box vs the height of the overflow box?

Thanks!

Nope they are the normal ones. BRS has photos of them with all the dimensions.

I really can't remember. I think I just filled the tank and let it over flow into the sump to where I thought was a good level and then switched the return pump on. then adjusted slowly. It will take about 5-10 for things to stabilize after an adjustment so give it time.

I really don't think that matters too much. The main drain however needs to be about 6-8" shorter than the emergency so you can fine tune the flow. Also important is the ATO. A constant level in the sump is needed to balance the flow.

HTHs!

yes that's correct. If you have a good ATO then the level in your sump will remain constant and the overflow will be balanced. I can't explain why but it is discussed in this thread. Something about atmospheric pressure......

Yes thanks Shaggss, it does help. The ATO through me for a loop though. Was not expecting that and really the first time I heard this. I appreciate the information. Whats the weather like in Hong Kong??:)

so i upgraded my pump from a mag 12 to a mag 18 and now my herbie drain is loud. It sounds more like a fan than anything. There's no gurgling sound, it just sounds like water is rushing very quickly down the drain. I wonder if it's because my drain is too small now. The mag 18 does about 750gph with how much headroom that i have and my drain is 3/4". Not sure if that is the problem or what to do here

according to bean animals calculator, my 3/4" pipe that is draining 12 feet to the basement should be able to handle 2300 gph!!
it is very loud though, you can certainly hear the water rushing down the pipe, with the new mag 18. with the mag 12, it was dead silent. any ideas?
