https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP0n7B4q9xI

This is the first of hopefully many videos on my new project!
I will be utilizing the generosity of the hobbyists to set up and maintain a 40 breeder fish tank!
So far i have!
40 Breeder
48inch t5 (No bulbs)
Cascade 1000
Hope you guys will enjoy watching the progress!
Thank You to those of you who have helped and those of you who will! also dont forget those of you who will support and enjoy watching the project take shape!

I have a few used 48in T5s you are welcome to have them I don't know what they are. ATIs most likely I cant let you know when I get home.

you are going to end up spending money at some point, this isnt a cheap hobby in anyway. Im not hating, theres a ton of stuff you will get for free. but if you don't get the water quality right its all going to die. relying on free stuff is going to kill living things that depend on you doing things regularly.

I dont understand how free stuff is going to kill living things? I'm not following how is water quality going to be affected by free stuff?

he is saying that it takes a lot of invested time and money to run a reef well and you have to be prepared to spend at some point. this cant be done on freebees alone.

Exactly, its like getting a dog and relying on people to give you free dog food, at one point you are going to run out and the dog is going to go hungry. so what do you do at this point? you are either going to buy dog food or let the dog starve to death.

I have some equipment laying around but I'm a little confused about this whole thing. Are you doing this for a school or public institution or something? I think we all usually try to spread PIF stuff out among new hobbyists rather than basically "give" an individual a free setup.

yup....what they said....
running a quality reef system takes hundreds (and in some cases, thousands) of dollars annually to properly maintain.
No no here wants to be a "hater" but the truth is that this hobby is intrinsically expensive...and so I personally would find it difficult to believe that one would be able to consistently rely on freebies as a way to properly maintain a functioning reef system. Regular water changes require Marine Salt, which can be costly. Quality lighting is also required as well as quality lamp replacements. Anyone giving you free used bulbs is basically giving you something that doesn't have much to offer your livestock...that's why they gave it away :p The filter you were given requires filter material that needs to be replenished weekly/monthly. Carbon generally lasts two to four weeks before needing to be changed. So the likelihood that you will maintain a constant influx of "free" stuff seems at best, a long shot...

plus...how will you maintain your other tanks?

cet98 im really impressed by the research you put in that post :) I raise my glass to you, and by glass I mean foam coffee cup because I'm at work.

A lot of us hobbyists are extremely generous. That being said I think it is pretty poor form to assume you can or should set up and maintain a reef purely on the donations of other reefers.

This is really the wrong hobby to be in if you're trying to save money... seriously.. heh.

You want to do something for a small fee, go fly a kite or something that doesn't involve dosers, various elements, making hundred of gallons of water a year, etc, etc, etc.

Do yourself a favor, and I say that with all due respect.

I never said anything about a reef. setup it seems most of you are missing the point of this..this isnt a thread asking for stuff its a thread to show what i will be doing. Did you guys watch the video? lol

Also i change my media about once every 8 months and i dont use carbon....I have plenty of extra media that came with the filter.

Ive kept a reef i know what it requires...

This project is just an idea i had that is slowly coming into play...It was never intended to be a reef or a salt tank. and Obviously I dont plan on forever not spending money on the setup.

This is the statement the i thought you meant that you were trying to start and maintain a reef tank solely with the generosity of hobbyists.

"I will be utilizing the generosity of the hobbyists to set up and maintain a 40 breeder fish tank!"

Yeah I have had a reef I would overd to be the luckiest person to properly care for and setup a reef. lol This is just for exposure for my project because i would like for people to see..Its looking like its turning into a Planted aquarium as i have just received some soil...and plant food..

Sorry for Causing such a ruckus.
