New Queen Angel

I just bought a very tiny (1-2") and skinny Queen Angel. She's currently in QT. I gave her frozen food and she ate some and also picked at an algae sheet. Does anyone have experience raising one of these beautiful fish? I read that Queens should be fed 3 times a day. Is that true? Also does it have any special diet needs?

formula one, angel formula, mysis soaked in Zoe and garlic once weekly and algae sheets. My Queen is fat and 10" long.

The tiny ones need to eat more often than the adults. I would feed it at least 3 to 4 times a day. Keep an algae sheet in there for picking on between feedings and feed a nice varied diet. In addition to the foods niles1967 listed, look for some cylcopeze to add to the mix.

Thanks. Problem I have now is that she's not eating. She picks at a piece of food once in a while but doesn't really want to eat.

the little ones can be iffy, especially if not looking great to start. sometimes live food can help stimulate appetite. try soaking enriching adult live brine with Selcon, phytoplankton, etc. it will also be helpful if you can put some live rock in the tank covered with worms, sponge, macro, etc. that it can pick at.

I tried a number of things and she picks at the food and eats a little. She seems to like the emerald entree forzen food the best and from time to time she picks at the algae sheet. There is an aged live rock in with her and I noticed her picking at it a little.

Problem is she was already in bad shape when I got her. The guy at the LFS told me she arrived really stressed and she didn't want to eat. Then he fed her in front of me and she did eat some of the frozen food, but just a little like she does for me. I think the biggest problem is that she's so skinny.

if you can keep her eating, that's a good part of the battle. the next week or two is probably going to be make or break... mysis (especially PE brand) is good for putting weight on fish, and many will take it. sounds like you are doing the right things. I'd offer as much variety as often as possible. good luck. t hey are pretty tough fish once established and healthy.

Along with the mysis, cyclopeze is very enticing and very nutritious as well.

I got mine at around 2-2.5" and I've had it over a year now. Has only grown 1" in that time. Slow growers. Mine was very picky eater at first.

They're nothing like Emperor Angels then. I raised an Emperor and that sucker ate everything I put in the tank and after he was done, he'd start on the algae sheets. Go through an algae sheet in a matter of minutes.

Becareful not to put too much food into your QT tank. Most fish eat very little on the first few days in the new environment. And most people worry the fish is not eating enough and ended up putting too much food into the tank, which would spike up amonea and kill the fish.

Your Queen is very small. I would feed it with NewLife Spectrum small pellet and Hikari Mysis shrimps (they usually come in small size). Start with 3 to 5 small pellets and 5 mysis shrimp each feeding. Perform water change often and in small amount to minimize fluxuations.

Good news! She's starting to eat more and is becoming very active in the tank. Looks like she's gonna make it. :) This will be the last fish I add to my tank (150g). She'll join a Foxface, Canary Wrasse, Humu, Niger and a Powder Blue Tang.

Good to hear! Please post some pictures when you get everyone situated! :D

Well, here she is in the DT and doing great, not so skinny anymore and got her color back. She's not afraid of anything and is eating and enjoying all the space and LR.
