New ritteri

Just got a large ritteri anemone yesterday (seems healthy, a bit of an open mouth). I am hoping my two ocellaris clownfish will begin to host in it. I have had the fish for a few years, they are captive bred. They spend their time mostly at the bottom of the tank below the powerhead and have laid eggs a few times against the back glass. Just like to hear some folks comments on how long it has taken for their captive bred clownfish to figure things out?

iv seen some tankraised clowns go in to the anemone as soon they put it into the tank.it all depends on what the clowns want to do.i had a pair of ccellaris clowns and it took them almost 2 months befor they would host there GBTA.although you do have the clowns natural host so they may host faster than that.but they may never host if they have been without an anemone for a few years.by the way were did you get that anemone. that seems to be a very healthy ritteri anemone.

I bought the anemone from a lfs in Ottawa (Canada). It seems very healthy (although it seems to have moved slightly down the rock so as not to get as much light, Hmmm...). I was very tempted to buy the two small clownfish that were swimming in and out of it too! But I already had mine and adding two more would probably have caused some problems. Does it help the anemone to have a hosting clownfish?

Once your clowns go near it, its all over, try to push your clowns near it, once they touch it they'll be all over it.

Well I am not sure why but the anemone kept on moving around and the foot did not want to stay on the rock. I am wondering if it found the surface too spikey and rough. I was able to remove it and place it on the front pane of glass. Other than the asthetics of it, would there be any harm in this? It seems very comfortable in this spot and has not moved since.

if you moved it hand you could put a hole in the foot and then you could kill it. if the anemone keep on moveing aroud the tank that means that it is trying to find a spot in the tank which it can find the needs that he wants.

Well I moved my rocks around yesterday and "gently" removed the anemone off the glass and onto the rocks that are now directy below the MH light. Today it seems very happy, I only wish the clowns would take to it. They get close to inspect things, but seem very apprehensive about it. They really like their home in the corner of the tank.

A lfs had two for sale. One was sold already when I happened to drop by. I was considering finding one to host the 2 clownfish I have, so now its in the tank . I already have a LTA and a condy which have been in the tank for quite a while.

There are 2 150w DE HQi and 2 65w actinics. I have the H.Magnifica on a tall rock pile so it is only 20 cm from the light with good flow. I realize this is probably the min. to keep this anemone however it seems to be happy so far. I may up grade to 2 250W in the near future.

The colours in the pics do not do it justice. The base is very dark purple pink, the tentacles light pink with the most amazing neon yellow tips.

I can't remember what thread it was, but a couple of experienced Mag keepers have stated that they had issues trying to mix them with other species of anemones.

I know from my own personal experiences, that I had issues anytime I had an LTA in the same tank as a Haddoni. So, if the Mag is giving you troubles, you may want to consider removing the other two anemones.

I would not put the words "healthy" and "open mouth" in the same sentence with regard to an anemone. As far as the moving goes, I would leave it be for two reasons. First, because it can get a micro tear and a resulting infection very easily and also because it requires energy every time it moves. Wasted energy plus shipping and relocation stress is more than enough to kill it.

Aside from the gloom and doom... nice lookin nem.

Nice anemone!^^ i have a riterri also, and like you i also got it for my mature pair of tank raised ocellaris clownfish, they never hosted it once and they do not even go near it, so i bought a pair of true perculas (ocean caught) the second i released them into the water they swam right into the anemone and have been hosting it for almost a week now, the clownfish get along fine since the true percs do not wander far from the anemone and the tank raised do not wander near it^^.

Pretty purple based mag you have there. Looks healthy so far. You should be fine with 150 HQI (i like 10000K myself) as long as the anemone is in the upper part of the water column, which it is from the looks of your pics. I wouldn't move it again, just let it move on it's own if it decides to. They like a smooth, flat rock to attach to.

I was going to say the same thing, i remember this coming up bout a week or two ago.

Well I just let it be. It moved off the high rock, to an area of only a little flow. I added a skunk clownfish, which took to it immediately and it has not moved since.
