New S. haddoni; Keep me on track

No display tank, and you bought an anemone. Pretty irresponsible. I dont believe that animal stands a chance in its present situation.

Still not settled.... Thought this was an interesting formation though.

2 x 250W SE MH with lumenarc A3 mini reflectors. One 20KK the other 14KK (what I had on hand.) they're about 3 ft over the tank so it can adjust.

I'd try to lower them down a bit. 3 ft is way over the tank. Drop it a foot and see if it stops roaming.

See if you can borrow some cycled live rock from someone who has a sump. You want it to have as little bio matter on it as possible - you just want to use it as your bio filter for a few weeks.

Do you have a sump? Any external bio filtration?

The only active biofiltration was the branch rock that was in my LFS's coral system. It's base rock but it is fully cured. There is no sump on this system. The only biofiltration was in the HOB power filter. That came of the ocellaris tank that was housing my son's fish before they were transferred to his newly set up FO display.

It's fully inflated. The bottle is 10" so I'd guess this guy would be 13-14 if it were flattened out. I did lower the lights after this shot was taken.

Here's what it looked like under natural sunlight before I picked it up.

Hi Walt,

I would get that light closer to the tank. Light intensity diminishes very quickly. A light 36" from the anemone is only 1/4 as bright as a light 18" from the anemone. If you are using an established hang on the back filter, you should be OK. A little more live rock wouldn't hurt. You might consider cutting out the bottom of a piece of tupperware, put it on your sand bed and fill it with sand. That would give the anemone a deeper bed without having to fill the whole tank with more sand.

FWIW, although merten's carpets don't come in that often, they are almost always in good shape and IME, are even less demanding than haddoni. You should have had whoever collected your clown grab the anemone as well. :). Is that an ocellaris sharing the anemone or a perc?

Thanks fpr the input Phil. I did lower the lights to about 18" maybe a little less. Good to know about the mertens. I had heard contrary to that previously but only from one other source. The pics above depict Clarkii at the LFS and polymnus in the dive shot. If you're talking about my avatar, those are A. thiellei.

I meant to (and thought I did) post this last night.... A friend on another site posted this in response to my photos with the old Pepsi bottle.

Picture doesn't work for me^

I have to concur with Phil on the ease of keeping Merten's. I kept one for a few years that was super hardy and very non demanding. I'll keep my eye out for you. Your Thiellei's deserve a nice Merten's.

Thanks. Here's that pic.

After lowering the lights as suggested, it did dig into that spot and has not moved yet.

I really like your setup with the bottle. It is very creative and natural looking. I would love to see some black and white saddlebacks rolling around in it.

I had a great looking pair of those years back. I moved them and my female was never right in the head after that. She had terrible light shock and wound up dying. I don't recall if she finally found an opening or just died as a result of stress. I was pretty upset about that, I had brought them up from about 2" to about 6"
I don't know that I'd be interested in keeping another pair though. My fish interest is very focused right now.
