New Shark & Ray tank

omg that's nice, that blue spotted ray is my favorite seen that down in Jamaica while snorkeling when on vacation as far as yellow spot he looks too mean..

I notice there are no pictures of the entire tank with livestock. One wonders if it would demonstrate what posters are noting--that this tank owner put vastly oversized shark in a too small tank.
I love the statement about your generous friend who will taxi the shark to the public aquarium. As if they are waiting with open arms from sharks from private owners! Public aquariums HATE this!

the very first pic is a full tank pic and has the shark and atleast one ray that i can see. the shark is in the back right hand corner and the ray is in the front right hand corner. I guess i got good eyes lol

edit: to add to my reply, the catsharks are alot less active then most fish we keep. tangs need alot more room then the catshark does and we still keep them. The catshark in the ocean doesnt do much moving around and mostly hide in there cave but the tangs are always swimming and love there space unlike the catshark. the catshark has gills that are different from the other sharks which is why the catshark dont have to swim so much like the larger sharks do. To many people judge these sharks like there a large species that do need there room to swim. now as far as the rays i have no idea about them.

I am curious if you are speaking for all public aquariums, or just certain ones?

So you bought one of the ebay acrylic tanks? Hows the quality? I was thinking of their 242g they always post

...and the matching sump too? the 100gallon size no?

that's a nice tank but I'm afraid you've overstocked it with specimens that will eventually outgrow your tank's dimensions.

-most public aquariums will not take private owner's sharks just because it outgrew your tank. so don't lean on them taking it. just a heads up.

I will have to agree with everyboby else that shark will need at least a 8 foot long tank and a 3 or 4 feet wide tank and at least 30 inches tall tank for it alone.Ya it might not swim around a lot but what about win it gets 4 feet long. Me personally I would havnt sold it to u cense u already talking about give to a public aquaruim that's why you should never get a fish without looking in to what the fish realy needs to thrive in a home kept tank. Not trying to be rude but that's not right how would u fill in that cramp up tank with those rays

Many zoos/aquariums have strict requirements on the livestock they take and most of the time, will not take stock from a private keeper. Unfortunately, many are inundated daily with similar requests. I have a great deal of experience with other exotics and if I had a dollar for every call I received for alligators, well, I'd have one of those 1000g tanks running. In rare instances, I have seen exceptions made for very unique specimens, however they come around few and far between. Although a beautiful specimen, catsharks are certainly not hard to come by.

Unless you know someone there or this was prearranged with the aquarium, you may be disappointed in their response. Please don't take this the wrong way as I hope it works out for you.

After 1 year, my shark will be leaving tomorrow for a new home. In a years time, my shark has double in length and will be moving to a local shark and ray pool at a LFS. The 10 foot diameter pool should gave him plenty of room. Will try and post some pictures tomorrow as the shark is removed from my tank by hand....(not mine). The shark has grown nearly a foot in the years time that I have kept him.

I hope he is happy in his new home! Any particular time this may be happening? I need some in-class entertainment today!

I wasn't able to get the pictures that I was hoping. He used a net and I was amazed at how easy it wen into the net. Almost no thrashing as it was lifted out of the tank and put in the tub for the move.

Here is a shot of the shark in his new home. Should have plenty of room in here. Not that far to go and visit once and a while....

so how is the bluespot ray doing? i would like one but i hear they die unexpectedly and i dont want that in my tank
The Blue Spot is doing great!. Not sure how he will react not having the shark in the tank, but probably won't miss him as it should be easier for him to eat. I will have had this one for a year in a couple of weeks. I've been told that they are difficult to keep in captivity, but so far, so good. I hope this one continues to do well as they are such a great looking ray.
