New Start-Tank Full of SPS

Nick your frags look great!!! I was interested in pacific sun black python xm gen II...how is the light coverage of your elos system 70 with this lamp??? I would like to cover a 28x28" tank with this lamp in order to grow sps on the centre atol and lps all around the atol...do you think it cuold fit perfectly the tank for this purpose???can you please give me any suggestions and impression about this lamp???thank you from Italy
ciao

Nice looking tank! I run GFO, GAC, and biopellets as well and all three together seem to work well. Without the GFO, my biopelelts will let my tank get up to over 1.0 ppm phos.

How is your growth so far?

little OT how does your radion cover your tank???do you think it could cover also a 28x28" with no difficulties in order to grow sps???thank you

Actually, most of the frags came from members on RC. My lfs do have frags and they're mostly on ORA stuffs. But the deal of frag pack from members are much better. I feel that I don't need no stinkin' name-brand or "designer" corals. With good husbandry, your corals can look just as good. With bad husbandry, the corals will turn brown. Name brand or not.

What? Where? I have been missing out. Do you have to be a super member to be apart of these deals?

If you are asking about my tank, I think that a Radion could cover a 28x28 footprint but I would definitely not put anything SPS outside of a 20'' area under the unit with the SPS around the edges pretty high and the ones directly under the Radion in the middle and upper portions of the tank. The PAR drops of pretty quickly as you get towards the edges but it puts light out that far.

have you ever considered other solutions for the illumintion of your tank such as AI sol, Vertex Illumina, PS Black Python XM GenII???why do you choose the ecotech radion???i'm asking since I'm going to start a tank like yours...thank you!

This is a seriously high spec system...Profilux PIIIEX, Elos, etc! You also have some very high end SPS frags too!

Subscribed; cant wait to see what this will be like in 6 months time. How about a FTS? - I know you only have frags now, but a photo showing the startup setting and then seeing the result 6-12months time makes for a very nice thread.

Keep up the good work!

furthermore do you have any panoramic photo of your tank to see the light coverage ???

Hi Gianluca,
Sorry, I've been out of sync with this reef forum. I'm looking for a new car and have been involving in more activity in my car forums.
My tank dimension is rough 30"x20". The fixture is about 8" from the water line. I feel the coverage is quite good. With 28"x28", I think you should be able to cover it. I'm using 100% blue, 100% pure blue, and 60% white. You'll have to hang the fixture higher and bump up the intensity. I worryabout the 28" width of your tank. Since the fixture is only about 6" wide, it might present a problem. Not sure....

Lighting the tank is one thing but are LEDs THE light for reef tank? I believe the light intensity, not I'm not sure on the light spectrum.
I'm not sure if it's my tank chemistry(which I think I got under control and rock stable) or it's the light but my SPS are not going that great. Some SPS are growing, some are not. For the ones that grow, it's mostly green corals. For the ones that don't grow, the color turns to green. I feel like this LED fixture is turning my SPS to green slowly regardless of the original color of the SPS! My plan is to keep the LED lit without messing with the intensity for another 2 months and see if the colors of the SPS indeed change to green or not. If it does, I'm hanging my Elos planet II(250W DE w/ 4 24W T5) back on the tank. I just want to see this LED technology to succeed in a reef so I'm giving it more time. But so far, I'm not very impress with the color.
Interestingly though, all my clams and LPS are doing great!

I'll have some update this weekend with full tank pics and some of my growth and colors.

Thanks. I do wish the amount of money I put in this system shows in the display tank but I'm not very satisfy still...

After running the pacific sun black python XM(XM white, blue, and royal blue) from Oct 11-January 12, I decided to go back to my MH and T5 in February. Specifically, Elos Planet II 250W DE and 4x24W T5. Bulbs are Elos 10K MH and ATI Blue Plus and Actinic. I saw an immediate improvement in colors when I go back to MH. Red and orange in my corals that I haven't seen when running the LEDs. About a week in the MH/T5, I saw new growth of the frags. The LEDs were very fancy running with slowly ramping up and down during the day. But the corals aren't color up or growing at all. Polyps extension were out when I first put the frags in the tank but after a week, the polyps are gone. I lost some frags due to slow STN from the base. I thought it was something not right with my tank but the parameters all checked out and were in my target. I was fed up and decided to go back to MH/T5 as my last attempt. Acros are full of polyps and colors are popping up everywhere.
Check out the difference. MH/T5 only been running since February.

On a side note do you play battlefield 3. I was playing earlier when the kids were sleeping and someone has the same screen name as your RC name. Long shot!

Huh interesting update. I keep seeing people switching back. I'm glad I didn't make the switch yet. Gotta wonder what it's missing.
