I don't know why "Variac" came up...
I have a fairly large amp built with lets say; a few more output stages than the original designer had invisioned. Each pair in each stage has to be fairly closely matched. To say the least, each output device costs a LOT and there are quite a few. Only a madman would throw 120vac to it and pray for linearity. I am not afraid of the smoke, fire and melting silicon... I don't want to replace $300 worth of output drivers.
The madman in me (for once) will wait for a variace and plenty of time to calibrate the amplifier correctly. It has been shelved for 5 years... it can spend a few more there. Who needs a 1kW sub amp anyway?
