New Tang stressed?

I bought a beautiful blue Hippo Tang from a fellow reefer on Saturday. Ever since I put her in the tank, she is swimming up and down the side of tank frantically, almost like she is fighting with her reflection. She does this all day and night and has been doing this for 3 days strait now. She does eat when I feed the tank, which is a good sign but I'm still worried because she seems stressed out. Is this normal?

How big of a tank did she come from and what other fish do you have? It does not seem normal to me from my experience.

in my smaller tank, when the glass is very clean my yellow tang and my coral beauty do the same thing ever since i got them a year ago. seems less now but still catch them once in a while doing it. not the best behavior but if they are eating not much more you can do for now. just keep her feed well, maybe she will stress less as time goes on. good luck

Thanks for the responses. She came from a 75 and mine is a 95. I have Clowns, Chromis, Dwarf Angel, Blenny and a Mandarin. No fish are bothering her or even going near her as she is the biggest fish in the tank, I think they may even be scared of her lol.

my hippo acted the same way because he was quite large,he will get use to your tank and settle.

Mine used to do that, and then discovered algae grows on the glass between it and its reflection, and now goes up and down eating the algae film! The movie got this fish dead-on ... the hepatus tangs are pretty stupid.

Thanks for the info, it makes me feel better. I have had bad luck with Tangs. It's funny because I had a baby hippo for over a year living in my 33 and he died of stress when I had to move. Ever since I got my 95, I can't seem to keep them alive for more then a few months. I am hoping I have better luck with this one, as it came from a fellow reefer who had her over a year. She is still displaying the same behavior today, hopefully it won't last long. Here is a video:

that's just stress from the move. There is no reflection inside the tank. They don't see their reflection. It's just stress period.

Why wouldn't there be a reflection and why wouldn't they see it?

I see it, in the video it is crystal clear. Every time I look at my tank from the side, I can see reflections on the opposite glass.

Sharynmarie: What do you mean, were all the sides of the tank painted?
This is strange: Yesterday I put a towel on the side of the tank and immediately the Tang stopped the behavior for the whole night (she was still acting a little weird going up and down the glass on the front of the tank but not that bad). I came home today from work and she is back doing the same thing.

Short term memorie loss. :D good one Doc!
Give it some time and she will forget she is streessed. ;)

no for a long time it was covered in Coraline algae. then after that there was rock in the way. and of course the tank sits in a corner so you cant really see much from 2 of its sides anyway.

have you been in a glass tank? try getting an underwater camera and take a picture from inside your tank, then you will understand what I mean.

you got the hipo from me and it loves greens. lots of algae. she will be fine just give her the vegis and she will be happy.

Hi Jan,
I'm glad to say that she is 10x better today. She still loves going up and down the side of the tank, but at least now she is swimming to other parts of the tank and not looking as stressed. Thanks again for a beautiful and healthy fish.
