New Tank Build Thread!! 46 Gallon Bow

Thanks! The lock works great..now if I could only figure out a way to get the little ones from sticking their hands around the back of the tank and into the sump!!

Make a little egg crate fence to keep them out :) . Tanks coming along nice. How did the rock do? i ordered 25lbs of key largo dry rock after seeing yours thanks! Is yours the key largo to? Check out my thread on the second page you can see the rock i got: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=16910018#post16910018 ...Is your rock growing algae?Did it cause a big nitrate spike? Im going to do my upgrade soon just getting a few more things in order im just nervous that the rocks going to cause a cycle again and kill off my livestock. They told me there new key largo rock that i got will not do this but i have to move the sand and stuff over so im nervous. Also where did you order your corals from?thanks!

Good idea! The rock did great. It is already encrusting with coralline and it looks live now, no white. Algae is growing nicely on the rock and no nuisance algae at all. I did not get a nitrate spike, but my tanks always run around 10-20ppm nitrates due to heavy bioload so I overfeed. I'd worry more about moving the sand then the rock. In fact, I'd get new sand and seed it with your current sand. The rock is the least of your worries it'll be great. I get my coral from a couple different places. Some come from local reefers in my area, some online (reef hot spot), but most from a local store called mainstream aquatics. He orders me anything I want from ORA and gives great deals. He sells online too. I put a bunch more in and am just about out of room. Picking up a few more SPS pieces then some from Acans for the bottom and then let it grow.

Here's some pics. Still don't know how to work this SLR camera so the color sucks.

I'm kind of confused...I saw a green open brain in a pic on page 2 that looked like it was being held in place with a piece of live rock sort of on top of it. Then I saw one in the sandbed on page 3. If the pic on page 2 is accurate, be careful with the brain being around rock or better yet DON'T have live rock on top of the brain to hold it. Their flesh is very sensitive and can rip/tear easily.

Also, I'd remove the heaters and move them to the sump ASAP. And I hope you reconsider the tang in a 46 gallon tank.

LOL...thanks for that. The brain had a rock behind it not on top of it, I'm not an idiot. The brain was moved to the sandbed for the reason you mentioned. Good idea on the heater, I'll move that down there. With regards to the tang, he's fine for now. In 6-9 months he will be moved to a much larger tank. The size he is now is fine for this tank. I am well aware of the requirements of fish. Plus the kids needed Dory now, the novelty will where off in a few months then when he becomes 3-4 inches in size he'll be in a 6 foot tank. I've had a couple very large setups in the past, not 375 but respectable.

Thanks Tater!

So I played around with the White Balance on my camera a little and some better shots to show color although they arn't quite exact yet. Still learning. Now I need to work on the clarity and get a better understanding of the white balance. While I wait for those pics to upload here's my full stocklist. I'm all done on the SPS side and now may get another brain or something for the bottom. I also will get some more zoas, but I'm pretty much stocked full as you can tell from the below list.

On a whim, I recently purchased a 46 bowfront to do a FO for my 2 daughters I brought it home and started doing some research. Wish now that i would have done the research first. Because now I am hooked on making a go at a reef tank. Below is a picture of my tank and its stand. I have a few questions about equipment if you dont mind. First this is concerning the Sump tank. The center compartment is about 10"x12"x33" or so, do you think it would be possible to build (i am handy) a sump tank big enough to be effective?
Thanks!

NOt really..it'll be tough as the footprint is smaller then my skimmer. I'd redo the stand so you have full use of the bottom..then you can fit a 20 Long down there and be set. People do run sumpless tnaks though, although it can be a PITA.

ok I am returning the stand and will go with the one below. What are the most important things to get first, to get the tank started? I will build my sump.
Thanks

It doesn't matter what you get first because you need it all to get your system going... generally people set up the plumbing first then the electrical then hardware (the sump is part of the plumbing in my mind.)

ncny is bama hijacking your thread? he looks new maybe he needs to start his own? I don't care... if you want his build with yours it's up to you.
