New Tank Checklist

I think that what I am doing is not very popular, but I really like the setup. I run two separate tanks. One is a fuge and one is a sump. From the two drain lines, one feed directly to the sump and one splits to feed the fuge and the sump. The sump drainage passes over some rubble, through a sponge (which may not be there much longer), then to the return pumps, which is where I keep my bag o carbon. The fuge is fed at the opposite end of the system. By teeing off, the flow is very low through the fuge. The sump and fuge connect where the meet. It drains into the sump via more piping connections. This gives me a low flow fuge and a high flow sump with no issues.

I like the idea of the teeth before the last section. Maybe I'll do the same and skip the 3-baffle system on that side. Thanks for the pic!

Crumbletop,
I think incorporating the teeth and another set of baffles(just do (1)high with teeth(2) low then (3)high instead of low, high, low)) would be a good idea. I'm toying with that on my next sump.

alternatively, you could probably do low-high-low and have the first "low" one have teeth that extend up as high as the "high" one. This would keep snails out, and would be exactly like a low high low baffle setup. The teeth would have to bottom out at the level of the last low. Boy that's a mouthful :)

Do I need any hole drilled in the sump? I am only going to have a simple sump with skimmmer and small fuge.

How does the water drain from the tank? In a pipe? How is it returned?

The best way to get drainage from the tank is through holes drilled in the bottom surrounded by an overflow (Reef Ready). If your tank is not already reef ready, chances are you won't be able to drill, as most places temper the glass on the bottom for more rigidity. In this case, you could go the 'drill your own holes in the back' route (comes with a few more difficulties), or an external overflow. External overflows have issues, as well, but can be made to be fairly trouble free.

You'll need a pump to return the water through a hole in the bottom on RR, or over the back if not RR (or through the back if you take that route).

What size pump do I need? I think I am going to go external pump. What size bulkehad would I need? Also, what is a good pump for my tank, without spending a fortune?
