New to the Nano reef

Right now I'm looking at buying a few frags locally...one of the LFS is moving in a month or so...they have a really small, cramped space right now...but, they have procurred a closed pharmacy and they are in the process of renovating...so, to facilitate a move to the new store all of their frags are 50% off...I'm going there this weekend to take a look at what they have available...I'll favorite place that guy though and keep an eye on what he has available in the coming months...

Tank Overload?

Tank Overload?

Hi! I've started my tank about 8 months ago. After my tank has fully cycled, i've started buying corals and fishes for my tank. Most of the corals are polyps and mushrooms. I have 2 percula clowns, a coral beauty angel, a six line wrasse, 2 other wrasses, 2 cleaner shrimps, 1 algae goby, 2 purple and red lobster and some hitchhiker crabs. I bought the coral sagerately by week, but about a month ago, i bought some polyps and mushrooms and fishes at the same time and put it immediately in my tank. After that my tank have a massive brown algae growth and my nitrates a peaking. Will I have a tank crash? or its just happens because the tank needs to adjust to the new bioload? Right now I am changing 20% of water weekly to lower the nitrates. Will my tank survive this? Here's my tank picture. You can see the massive brown algae growth.

wakkats - You tank will survive...the algal bloom is because you overloaded the tank too quickly...the cycle completed at the bioload you had in at that time...then, you add all this poop producing stuff which we all know poop turns to ammonia and so on...you were seeing your live rock and live sand at work when you saw nitrates...the ammonia eating/nitrate producing bacteria were converting the ammonia to nitrate quite efficiently...but, the nitrate eating/nitrite producing bacteria needed to multiply to handle the increased nitrate...it will take some time, but the nitrates will subside and nitrites will kick in until such time as you go through the cycle again...do you have a sump? If so, adding some macro algae in there such as chaeto will eat up nitrates fairly quickly as well...

By the way, what kind of setup do you have and what is in the bucket in the last picture above?

Also, hey guys, nobody looked at my new pics yet? And where are all your pics guys!! ;)

Thanks for the advice Hopeful Reefer. The tank on the bottom of my aquarium is my sump and refugium on the left bottom. The bucket contain some newly cut mushrooms and i was letting it stick to a rock rubble before i glue it to a bigger liverock. I didn't have a propagation tank, so that'll do for now. Thanks a lot. My next target was to buy a T5HO lighting sets. I'm planning to get some SPS when my tank reach a year old.

Eventful day.

Got my new 150W Sunpod Metal Halide Fixture installed. OMG the light looks AWESOME. I love the blue light it gives off and the MH shimmer :)

I even found a buyer for my old hood today.

I also got an Aqua Nano Remora Skimmer. Easy to install, sleek, takes a couple days to break in but once it does I'm hoping for good things. So far I'm happy as a clam.

I also got a 5 gallon Cadlights tank. it will house my firefish and my Neon Goby. The firefish is a wuss when it's feeding time in the other tank so he needs some space to himself.

I plan on spending the money from the hood for some more SPS corals and plan to move my softies/LPS to the Cadlights tank.

Pictures in a couple weeks when I get everything moved around :)

I really liked it when I put the MH on my tank too...went from a more yellow look to a more blue look...and I never really noticed how yellow the T5s looked until I added the MH...

As for your choice of skimmers, I think the Remoras are a good choice...I have a regular Remora on my 30g...it pulls out a fair amount, but it is rated for a much, much larger tank so I think it is pulling stuff out so quick it has nothing to pull out for a few days until I feed again... :D

Hurry up with dem pics already!!

Hey Jason,

How noisy was your Remora when you first got it? Does it quite down a bit after it breaks in?

And if your already waiting for pics your gonna be waiting for a little bit :)

Looks great...what's the secret to your GSP? Mine I get as frags and they always seem to virtually melt away to nothing...levels are good so I'm not sure what it is?

Thanks Jason, no secrets. It has actually looked better than these shots . I think the high summer temps are affecting them . The polyp extension is usually much better.
That rock is my first coral and although it looks great I have not seen much growth in the 8 months I have had it.
If I had to say something I would say good flow (Something that keeps the polyps moving) and an unshaded area. Hoping for a pop in growth eventually . I've heard people say they they can take over tanks so as long as this rock looks good I will be happy.

In this video you can see the current it gets.

Wow...that is a TON of flow on them...maybe that is the problem, where they are they have little flow...I'll move them today and hope they come back...not sure if they will or not but I can try...

Went to a huge coral extravaganza today. Fragapoloza. 3 local stores (Sharkysreef.com, darklordcoral.com & ofacorals.net were there along with a lot of hobbyist sellers/swapers.

Picked up the following SPS:

Got these from one guy:
Purple Bonsai
Superman Monti
Pink Birdsnest
Miami Orchid

And these from another:

Solid Green Birdsnest
Bright Pink Birdsnest

Red Digi
Green Digi

Green Porcipora

Paid $135 for all of them, for comparison I've seen the Miami orchid on LiveAquaria go for $40 and Superman Monti's go for the same or more. Heck of a deal on them all.

The Purple Bonsai is the pride and joy though. It is the coral that is the entire reason i got into SPS, I think I saw the first picture of it on Atlantis Aquariums website and LOVED it.

Pictures tomorrow.......

Colin,

Looking good! I will have to come and see them soon. I still owe you guys a picture. I just got a new computer and have to load all the digcam software yet.

Tom

Wassup everyone! Hope you all are doing fine. I think it is time for some tank updates . It has been a while.
Well I had a major crash about a month ago during vaca. The tank just got way to hot and i lost 2 fish and a few corals!
On a good not the suviving corals have just about recovered and the tank is coming around again . here are some pics of my newest piece and the tank. I will be waiting to see all yours.

Sorry it is a bad pic. I will try later with my work camera. I have the large leather there out of the tank and into the frag tank, which of course take up the whole thing too.

Tom

That thing is huge...I have a hairy/frilly mushroom that is about half that size and growing bigger every day...thinking of fraggin him and just giving him away totally in 4 or so smaller pieces...he too takes up too much room in my tank... ;)
