After quite a bit of research I finally pulled the trigger and my wife purchased me a skimmer for my B-day present. Decided to go with a Super Reef Octopus. This beast is bad. Only been running 3 days. I was told the skimmer wouldn't be fully broke in for a few weeks so run it low. If it does this new, I can't wait to see what it does after its all dialed in.... Now for some pics...

Gary, there is a drain line in the collection cup. Came with the hose as well as a plug. I currently have plugged. Was wondering if maybe the drain line would get clogged. The skimate in the cup was thicker then I thought it would be. But once its broke in I plan on running it more on the wet side.

Kat I believe its anything but sweet :lmao:

solRNY This is one nice skimmer. It is pretty except I really don't care for the red decal. But then I didn't get it for the looks. ;)

Capt as you said sometimes you just have to dive in and go for it. Thanks for your input on the skimmer.

One good note my DT and my sump have never looked so clear.

haha one time after having my nwb200 overflow into the sump I stuck a 1/2"id hose onto it and into a bucket..check yours.. might be the same as mine, use a half in id clear hose..

BTW very nice skimmer..love that pump..

+1 on having a cool wife... great skimmer with a top-notch pump. You can't deny those results, especially after only 72 hours!

Cully the only real noise I get is the water exiting the skimmer back into the sump. Its noticeable with the cabinet doors open but I still hear the Vortech more ;). I suspect once the skimmer is broke in I'll be able to dial that flow back some. Right now its pretty wide open. I adjust it back a little everyday. Time will be true test.

Trust me I'm grateful for the wife. Shes the better half and very good about this hobby. She just wants us to have a very nice Reef Tank like the ones she sees on here. Still have a long long way to go. But I can see results in my tank since I started. I learn more more everyday....

that skimmer looks INSANE!!!! got me thinking of maybe buying one of them instead of a GenII Vertex-IN 250............................oh decisions decisions

if designed properly the drain won't get plugged.

cleanliness of a skimmer's neck affects it's performance.

a skimmer cup without a drain line is insane IMO.

These cups hold a lot of wast and start to stink bad after about 5 days. I pull the cup out and wipe it down with just my hand and sink water once a week and it runs great.

Was just looking at these skimmers myself (very nice)! And yeah I dont care for the red decals myself but with results like yours I wouldnt mind :)

after 5 days many cup would runneth over!

tip: drain the skimmer cup to a covered bucket (with autoshutoff) or washbasin and simply remove the top lid to clean it. You'll seldom need to remove the entire cup this way of running the skimmer.

I'm often guilty of being lazy (because I have a drain line), and don't clean the skimmer neck as frequently as I should.
