New unwashed live sand

Put in unwashed live sand into a new 75 gal tank and the sand has finally settled. The milky cloudiness has almost settled completely. However now there seems to be a fine white film on the sand which I assume is the particles causing the cloudiness that have settled. When stirred up it against makes the water milky. Should I siphon this off the sand or just leave it? I want to level the sand into low spots but it becomes hard to see them shortly after stirring it around a bit.thanks in advance for any help!

If you don't have one already you might want to incorporate some type of mechanical filter on the tank. Just go about your business & keep rinsing the media out until the tank clears up.

I am using the marineland penguin 350 with bio wheel. It has extra slots on each side for a 2nd filter cartridge. Tomorrow I will pick up extras and put some in

I don't think that filter is going to work for your marine tank. Try to use a sump with socks.

I was using the h.o.b penguin filter on my 56 column when I first started. Worked good at the time, till I upgraded to a canister filter. Then I upgraded to sump

Something doesn't sound right. Though I generally don't bother with live sand, it shouldn't be 'milky' and certainly not leave a fine white residue. That sounds more like unwashed dry sand. Live sand will make your water slightly cloudy at most.

Ha ha ha ha ha... yeah.. you clearly don't use live sand..
What they are saying is normal and its basically no different than dry sand..
Its still loaded with fines/dust/foam,etc.. and you cannot tell the 2 apart once in water..

I have live sand from a tear down. Now that I look back I should have washed it. The sand is so fine it clouds the water for hours when it is stirred up.
