Nina - you could put that sand in a tupperware or similar container, that way you could make it deeper and contain it better. You can also hide it behind your rockwork if you want.
it isn't a big deal for me, he'll be in qt for several weeks. since he's the only one in there, i just do a 2 or 3 gallon water change every few days no matter what the ammonia alert badge says. i use a turkey baster every day to get the poop logs out. the sand in my dt is plenty deep in the back of the tank for him to bury himself.
yessiree! everything gets qt'ed around these parts. i have fed this guy 3 times today and NOTHING has hit the sand. he might outgrow the 10g before his time is up in qt!
It doesn't need to be sugar sand by any means. 2-3mm should be fine.
What you don't want is something as coarse as, or approaching that of, crushed coral which lends well to causing cuts/abrasions on the fish. This can lead to bacterial infections.
