New Yellow Eye/Nori Tang Eating Abnormalities?

Hello All,

I hope you can give me some advice. I just bought a small Nori approx. 2to3" in length and cannot seem to get him to eat. He has been in the tank for approximately 3 days. He does graze on the rock as i have a couple small algae blooms and detritus available. However, I am curious how you get them to eat say Mysis, Formula 2 pellets, or possibly flake food or is there an adjustment period for acclimation to a new tank and as usual I should be more patient LOL.

Thanks again for all your help,

Adam:lol:

Do you mean Kole Tang?
Any other tank mates?
Was it eating at the store you bought it from?

that would be my question was it eating before you bought it. also any other tankmates, i found that fish will watch other fish eat then learn lol go figure my flame didnt wanna eat until he saw other fish in the tank eating.

Yes, I meant Kole Tang. I was viewing another site and well brain fart. Anyhow, the kole has 3 other tankmates. A mated pair of OC and 1 Fridmani PSC. He is very active and seems to have acclimated fine but I have not seen any activity on the eating side. I did not have the LFS feed em however he seemed to have a full stomach.

Thanks,

Adam

Bristletooth tangs eat detritus and microalgae in the wild, so they are not used to eating pieces of stuff in the aquarium. The fact that he grazes on rocks and such is a good sign that nothing is physically wrong with his mouth (common in this genus). Try very tiny foods. I had great success with crushed up flake food.

+ 1million. They dont have the proper mouth or tooth structure to tear nori from the sheet to eat it. I HATE when I read people giving advice to add a kole tang to eat hair algae or caulerpa. ACK!

Thanks again to all my fellow hobbyists and freinds on the reef. I will attempt the crushed up flake food and see how it goes.

If you're worried about not having enough microalgae in the tank, you can rubberband some nori to a rock, and he'll eventually learn to eat it. I've had a Kole for nearly four years and that's how he "learned". Now, he'll get right after the nori sheet with the other tangs and rabbitfish.

Tying nori with a rubberband on a piece of rock works for my Yellow Eye Kole. I have him for 3 weeks and will only pick on the rocks and glass. Rubberband some nori on a rock and when I got home he has a big tummy. And is eating nori off a clip and also eating pellets now.

Well, the crushed flake did not work but he nailed some frozen brine. WooHoo, He still still looks healthy and continued to graze after the brine.

Thanks again all,

Adam

If I find something else I will repost

All is well. Must have needed some time to acclimate. Eats Brine, Mysis, Frozen Formula 1, ect.. Thanks for all the help and as usual I need more patience.
