Newbie Corner Feedback Thread

Paul worked with my granddad, who was chief electrician on the Chrysler Building when it was built! :D

That's true, Albert Stewart was his name.

Actually Tom old man I changed all of the electric service in the Chrysler Bldg from the old 2000 amp Frankenstein switches to circuit breakers.
Your Grandfather did a fine job.
I also installed the fire alarm system in the Empire Empire State Building but I am most proud of building the Playboy Club on Fifth ave and I was the foreman for Penthouse Magazine on Broadway.
I have pictures of my wife in a Playboy Bunny outfit when she was 18 but I will keep them to myself thank you very much.
OK back to chemistry

Some of those displays pull more current than the light show at the Superbowl. Ask Paul; he lives where every home on that Long Island has more lights than most of downtown 5th avenue.

I had no information on what the circuit panel of the Chrysler building pulled in amps. I bet they had some super strength beakers, fuses in granddads case. Grandpa never gave me the details.I have trouble knowing why some florescent run at 277 volts.

I haven't been to the Playboy club in over 40 years. Out in Ohio we had the Hustler club in Columbus and then we had Newport, Ky.. But that's another story.

Yes but now I have solar electric that I installed a few weeks ago.
And I wired many of those lights on fifth ave including Trump Towers and The Plaza hotel. My reef MH lights are two fixtures I had left over from the Plaza. The next time you see a night time picture of the Plaza, notice the outside lighting. I did it.
I am thank God now retired and I don't use lights in my house, we converted to candles

Tom each panel was 2000 amps and there were loads of them.
The Chrysler buildind diden't have 277 power then. It was built during the depression. I would imagine it has it now as 110 lights are too expensive to wire now.

Dang Paul, does she have a sister....er....grandaughter maybe? :D

LED's are the hot ticket for street lighting now. Especially here in the far north. Metal Halides won't strike on a cold day. LED's actually last longer and get more efficient in the cold.

And the cool thing about 277V lighting is that you can put over 4,000W on a 20A circuit. Means a lot less expensive copper is needed. But any solar power is pretty much off line for the next couple months. ;)

I really empathize with you. I was a project manager for 30 odd years and have come across many a talented fresh-from-college engineer who "knew it all because they read it in a book". When I first came to the US from the UK I tried to apply for a PE but was told that my college in the UK was not accredited so I would have to start as an EIT (engineer in training) - At 35 years old I said 'no thank you'.
I worked with an architect on a 365,000 SF greenfield manufacturing plant who had never worked on a job site in his life. I had a print of one of Frank Lloyd Wright's famous sayings framed for him. It read:
'A surgeon buries his mistakes but an architect advises his clients to plant vines'. I told him that my company buries it's architects who make mistakes.
I think he got the message :p :p :p

Ok, quick question.

Do I need to use a air pump/stone when mixing my salt water? A buddy was over and said he use's one to mix his, but I don't remember reading anything about it. I used a powerhead overnight to mix it.

Thanks

Lonnie

Phil If she had a sister, I doubt she would go to the North Pole.
Just about all lighting in Manhattan is 277 volts now, copper is just too much.
Alan I know what you mean. I think architects should have to work in the field for a while to see what they are designing.
Whenever I would see an architect's name on a new job I knew we were going to make money on their mistakes. If they seemed like a nice person I would point them out before we built it but if they were a know it all, we built it just like they showed. Then charged them to change it.
Tom instead of college I went into the army so I could protect you people who wanted to go to college and keep fish tanks.
I never made it to college but had to continually take courses all of my career. (I even have a pole climbing diploma) They had a thing called life experience or education, something like that where I could have taken all of my courses and applied them for a diploma. I thought it was rediculous. I know what I know and I don't need a diploma to tell me what I know. I have done pretty well with out it.

Lonnie, you don't need an airstone. A powerhead is better.
I usually just dump the salt water from one bucket to another for a while but you never get all the salt to disolve like that. Do what you are doing, put a powerhead in there overnight. If the solution is clear with the correct salinity and temp. you are good to go.

Out in Ohio we had the Hustler club in Columbus

Tom, Coincidentaly enough I also wired Hustler Magazine in NYC.
That guy is a real sleezebucket.
At least Hugh Heffner was kind of senile and the guy who publishes Penthouse Is kind of cool.

But speaking of new tanks I worked as a foreman at Barneys also.
That is a clothing store up town that charges like $500.00 for socks.
Anyway they installed a salt tank 18' long, about 18 inches deep and 8" front to back.
Now that is something to aquascape. They diden't have a clue how to decorate it but I would love to have something with those dimentions.

I also did most of the work for Bloomberg. As you know, besides being Mayor of NY he is a billionaire (something like you)
There are beautiful reef tanks all over his offices. They don't even feed them. The place that maintains them changes the fish weekly and replaces the corals every few weeks.
I guess if you are a billionaire, you could do that.

Not being a clothing store mogul, I have few, if any, $500 pairs of socks. I think the ones I am wearing came from Dollar General, let alone Saks. :D
