Waterkeeper

by the way, i asked my hubby more abt the subject on what you mentioned. He says that it has been seed and I just ended up with live rock that didn't have that much coralline growth, but I will buy another koralia to point to the sand bed, I already have 2 of them on each side of the top tank. maybe that might help ... Thanks agian ^_^

You can get somewhat the same condition you want with the two koralias and place them low in the tank--pointing upwards

waterkeeper , the way the the camera was set up eliminated the purple colors in the pics making allmost everything black and white the pics were taken under antic lighting giving the greens and reds more pop, all the live rock was uncured except for 1 piece from my main displaythat is completely incrusted in coraline.
we used around 5 lbs live rock uncured and 15 lbs base plus the 3 lb piece for the display, as for the cyano its starting to fade away , it came from over feeding of the tank which has been cut back and more frequent water changes about 5 gal a week, the 2 koralias are producing lots of flow including over the sand bed, there are a few low flow spots but the tank is mostly med to high flow... in the last month she has had almost 1/2'' of growth on the monticaps !!

here are a couple pics from a while back of the tank

I have 4 k4's giving me about 5500 gph(including the return)
Three are in the left corner--one is in the right corner. The one in the right corner points downward but is angled towards the front glass so there is no direct flow against lps corals. Two on the other side are pointed across the surface of the tank--agitating the surface very roughly--this is for maxium gas exchange on the surface. The third pump on that side bounce against the front glass about mid range down insuring that I have some mild turbulance through the centre of my tank

This is what is also known as zones of flow--the higher areas close to the top of the reef get the most flow and is usually reserved for sps corals(although I have chose not to get into that yet). The mid range gets less flow and finally the bottom gets the least flow and the least light.
There is also a circular flow from left to bottom to top right and across the tank to the overflow--ensuring debris ect gets taking out of the tank before settling on the bottom low flow areas where cyano ect could start

I love your CB Butterfly. I really want one in mine. What’s the pro and cons with them. I also have a question of water flow. I will have a 48" long external overflow on the back on my 60x30 so I should get good skimming. I am thinking of having the return hooked up to a SCWD with one leg going to the front LH corner and the other going to the front RH corner. Where should I direct these. Also I will have in-tank Tunzes for flow. What would you recommend for my tank -- number, size, and flow rate? I don't want to position any on the front but could add some to the sides.
Thanks

The pros are that they are harmless to other fish and just a caution on eating corals polyps compared to some other butterfly fish.

The cons are that they are very difficult feeders and usually die of starvation within a few months
I have found the secret is to qt them by themselves until you can get them to eat something. In my case it only eats mysid shrimp--frozen ones and lots of them

If available in your area they love live blackworms--I just have not been able to find them here.

The flow rate in your tank should be between 20-40 times your tank volume in gph.

Can you post a picture of your setup?

Have a look at this blog---the overflow system is in the tank however

Small Butterfly's,of any species, are coral eaters. Often a small one like a CB is not going to cause that much damage. Just be warned that they can tear up small coral specimens.

Asking me about a DIY plumbing question is a dangerous experience; not to be done unless in desperation. ;)

I have two angels and a butterfly--its just a theory but I have qt'ed each one until they are feeding on a suitable food other then coral polyps--then introduced them to the main tank.
I also keep them well fed twice daily
They all have never touched a coral.

I know Scot but it is always chancy.

I was just posting to get some opinions on my theory--its still not too late in life to get my doctorate--especially if you can become a masseuse:cool:

Mine will be like Beans but in an external overflow and will be doubled up (six pipes). I posted in Beans thread to ask about using two sets of his overflow in a single box. Not sure if that is a good idea. If not will get the tank manufacturer to add a divider.

good idea---I know a few reefers who have used this system and swear by it (not at it  )

I never look at the Newbie forum as I have been doing this for years. :D

Heh Tom.
I just mixed my first batch of SW, adjusted the SALINITY with my RETRACTOMETER, checked the PH, NITRATE, NITRITE, & AMMONIA with my test kit so am I a CHEMIST now?
