There was a Bill Hiatt that is a lobbyist/spokeperson for BASF Chemical. As they do sell water treatment chemicals I guess it could be him.
Oh by the way. The EPA had this to say about bacteria additives used in septic tanks
No, not that Bill Hiatt. The Bill Hiatt I know never worked for BASF. As for the EPA paper, it's funny that this is one of goverment agencies that purchase Hiatt product on a monthly basis. Tom, you do realize that when selling product to the goverment like the carbon and bacteria, you have to able to backup your claim what the product will do or perform. Otherwise the goverment will come down on you like a tone of brick for false and fraudulence advertise or claim.
Jonatan, I know you don't believe the Right Now bacteria can consume algae, how about protein? do you think the Right Now bacteria can consume protein?
How about this, what if I tell you the pump inside your tank for circulation can actually lower your pH in the tank? Do you believe that? Anyone?

Lots of bacteria consume protein. I think you're just trying to advertise a product I would never buy or recommend, based on its description so far, so I don't care to discuss that issue further.
Sure, adding a pump could lower pH. I don't understand what that has to do with this thread. Shouldn't that be some other thread?

Well, I think I am going to throw away my RO/DI after reading this. The large amount of iron and other metals in my tap water will obviously have no affect on the inhabitants of my tank. And, if it does manage to cause an algae bloom, I will just buy some bacteria to eat the algae. After they have consumed the algae, I will purchase some more bacteria to eat the smaller bacteria. After they have consumed the bacteria, I will purchase more bacteria to eat the smaller bacteria. Soon, my tank will be full of bacteria-eating bacteria. Hmmm, do I have room for some carbon?

Thanks everyone for your input, on this apparntly controversial issue. My boxes of goodies are starting to arrive so in a few days I can put water in the tank! How exciting!!! The coral book showed up and its amazing btw.
What is this place IPSF I see people referring too?
I think I am still planning on getting the TBS rock. From what I have read from others posts it sounds like a lot of fun getting a rock with all sorts of things that could be living on it. I realise some can be bad, but I a very adept at catching things in an aquarium(worked in a FW fish store for a few years). I am prepared to battle mantis and hairy crab!

As to the fiji walt smith stuff, it seems that the rock is going to be pretty devoid of all life except for purple coraline by the time it gets to me. I dont see how any sea dwelling organisms can go that long out of water, and last the whole curing cycle without food. Im sure the better shapes can contribute to a much cooler aquascape, but I am willing to make the trade off.

The refractometer was a good deal and very good price. I have 2 of them myself.
Salifert test I prefer Aquarium Pharmacuticals myself but I know lots of people who prefer the Salifert brand.
water flow well I have 28. something x tank water and it is not enough. I need more.
Please disreguard everything posted by skylab1, from what I can see he is a tank service company. And in my experience, these guys on the average, do just enough to your tank to make do and therefore you need them forever, it is not cost effective for him to make your tank run by itself. (they would be out of a job very soon if they did that)
I know this about maintance companies because I have several friends who do this for a living, yes they become very efficent (sp) at what they do. But I find they use minimal amount of equipment. Especially the ones who order the fish, coral,etc wholesale and then sell it to you at retail. They simply sell you another fish or coral when the one they already sold to you dies.
I have on occassion gone and worked on tanks for a couple of them because they were out of town and had an emergency with a tank here or there. I was shocked at how little equipment, the tank actually had, to maintain the tank. But not the condition of the tank considering the lack of equipment. I made recommendations to the tank owners, as to what should be done, and what equipment they actually needed.
Also I did not see any mention of a uv sterilizer as planned equipment, but to me it is almost as important as the protein skimmer, if you have fish. I have seen what they can do, and always recommend them as necessary equipment to purchase before fish.
Most if not all of our local club members are using them, We have over 100 members and we all swear by them.

As for the cheapo Jebo's flooding the market, I have 2 - 4x 55 watt and I would not trade them for anything less than MH. Which I did, But I still have them and plan to use them on a future tank. They served me very well for 2 + years and I have them stored for the next tank they will fit on.
