I think it's like cycling a new tank and is maybe why some people prefer to get water from established tanks rather than wait for their own tanks to cycle?
 
Maybe that's what was meant. I'm not sure. All I know if that I'm not planning on having this quarantine tank cycle for the period of time I keep the percula in it. I'll just be doing water changes, and have placed a monitor in it to detect any ammonia.
 
Just to give an update on the percula. After having it in quarantine for a little less than a day, and adding the tetracycline medication, it is looking better already. It seems to be a bit more active, has been eating a bunch of flake food. It looks like the white spots are slowly going away, and the white area on it's tail (seen in the first picture of the thread) now has a more visible black line around it.
 
When you change water, use at least 1/2 of the water from old tank. I am glad that he is doing better.
Quarantine tank don't cycle, because it is bare. There is nothing there to cycle. You just got to take care of ammonia with water change.
