Ok guys and gals, We are looking to start buy things here and there for our next tank. We have a 60g that is currently running as freshwater and we will be switching over to a reef tank and we want to get everyones suggestions as to what equipment we should buy.

Pump, lighting, etc

Thanks in advance

Staci,

A lot depends on what corals you wish to keep, at least for the lighting.

As far as filtration, will you be plumbing in a sump, or using canister or hang on back

A little more info will get you direct replies

We will be plumbing in a sump and would like to get enough lighting that we could keep just about anything in the tank. We have been looking at all the different coral and love so many for all different classes so we figure better to just prepare to have them all lol.
We have a 20g long that we would love to use as the sump if that would be big enough. We just don't have any idea what to start looking for. We love the look of really blue lighting to give the coral the glowing effect but can they grow under just that type of light?

T5 is my opinion! and I had 6 bulbs on my 65gl If you want the list I will gladly share. I have run many brands and currently like ATI I "think" they look a little more blue. I have grown out many types of coral including many sps, lps, zoas. I currently run 6 t5's on my 150 and like it. The 20gl should be fine for your sump, do you want in sump skimmer or external, same with your return pump in sump or external. Are you drilling the tank? Also since that was a FW tank did it ever get treated for Ich, or use any copper based meds? It has been said they can leach from the silicone but I'm not the expert on that topic. hopefully someone will chime in. also lights are you running a canopy or fixture above? Sorry lots a questions!

Chris

This tank has never been treated for anything. Ricky just got home and is informing me that he is going to jump on the build our own tank wagon and use this 60 as the sump. We maybe having a build party soon lol. He is wanting to know if there are any stores that offer a COMAS discount on acrylic?

Are you building the tank out of acrylic? or using the acrylic to make baffles in the sump? Cause acrylic wont adhere to glass properly. U have to use glass in glass or vice verse. As for discounts, I dont know. That stuff is dang expensive and I dont recomend it for a tank. My tank is acrylic and I HATE it. It scratches if you look at it and the algae that grows on it is very difficult to remove. You could try something like what Paul has on his tank. It is an acrylic with a glass front. You cant bind acrylic to glass but you can seal it and the way he put his together, the water pressure pushes the glass against the acrylic. Its hard to explain, but you can check out his 600g build thread for more info. Whoa. Thats twice in one thread I have referred you to Paul's tank. Well, it is purdy.

I have always run acrylic baffles in my sumps. As long as you use aquarium grade silicon and not GE type I or II there should be no issue with it.

Don't think so. Need the builders to jump in here, but I think most go to Regal plastics....

Regal is great for the big stuff, I go to lowes and get my 1/4 (.22) acrylic. They are cheaper than Regal and they cut it free.

Ok, so this thread morphed from 'what do i need' to 'how do i build an acrylic tank'.

LOL

I would not go with an acrylic display tank. People choose acrylic b/c it's lighter and really, until you get up around 300g (if not more than that) I wouldn't consider it. Like Lauren said, it will scratch very easily.

As for your equipment, I suggest making a needs and a wants list. Things you'll need to just run the tank and then the list of things to add as your tank matures and you can work them into the budget.

Lights: I like T5s and have 8 of them. You have nice color combination options available and they don't hog electricity. Other options are halides, VHOs, and LEDs. LEDs are the up and coming choice and are still expensive. VHOs are an older method, but will grow beautiful corals. You should research the costs and benefits of each method and decide what is right for you. Consider the cost and frequency of replacing the bulbs as well as the cost of the initial fixture.

Powerheads
: I like Koralias and Tunzes. They both move a lot of water with low wattage. What you choose here will depend on the size of the tank. There are many options for powerheads and lots of opinions on them as well.

Return pump: really depends on the size of the tank and the height for the return. In water vs. out and the amount of water you need to move.

Heater: I think you said you have this covered?

Refugium Light: spotlight and flourescent bulb of 65k from Walmart.

Sand, Rock, rubble cheato and water.

Now, other equipment that you will likely want....

skimmer, RODI unit (if your tank is >75g), calcium reactor, controller, back up power supply, and this list could go on and on and on. There is always something new coming out.

Good Luck. Go slow and read, read, read.

Thanks Steph, Your reply was exactly what I was wanting. I wanted to hear what someone would buy in order to set up a new tank. The tank is going to be 112 gallons with a 60 gallon sump. Ricky and myself are doing so much reading. It is really cool to have a hobby and to top that off it is a hobby that both Ricky and I are excited about. Ricky told me today that we are obsessed with reefing lol

How many powerheads would I need and what size for a 112 gallon tank? Any suggestions for the skimmer? Size and brand? and remember we are going to be doing this on a budget. lol

Ok we have pick out some of the equipment that we are going to purchase for this build and they are

2 Odyssea T5 4x54w
Odyssea ps160
Odyssea WP1000 Water Pump
Odyssea Submersible 500W Aquarium Heater

what do ya think?

sounds like you're a fan of Odyssea. lol

I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with this brand.

We are goin g to give them a go. I have been researching them for over a month now and all things say they are a reliable brand.

That would be me as well,
However good research is worth a million.

My one comment would be on a heater.
Heaters can get knocked around in a sump. It's why many of us don't use glass, but use titanium instead.

If I remember correct, type I is perfectly fine to use. It's type II that there is a problem with.
