Niger freinds?

i have three questions:
1) can aiptasia eating filefish live peacefully with a 3" niger? i have a buttload of aips in my 55 (growout) tank and want/need to get rid of them. the filefish and trigs have similar body shapes so im concerned.

2) honestly, can a baby pinktail and a baby niger (3" or less) live together without fighting in a 55 (growout) tank?

3) can a baby pinktail live in a 75 reef with a 4" yellow? do i have a big chance of losing the peppermint shrimp in the tank? would a cleaner be safe?

do i have a better chance with a bluethroat than a pinktail? dont they get smaller?

Niger is a hit and miss most are docile but I have seen one that was a meanee. Back in the 90's I had a trigger tank Clown, niger, huma, rectang, pink tail, queen, undulated, the only one who would not play nice was the undulated. Oh yea I could not afford to feed the queen.

Every Niger I ever had was nice for six months to a year then decided he was a clown trigger one day. They all ended up getting removed after beating the crap out of my Austrailian Harlequin Tusk. I like nigers, but not so much that I'm going to let them punk my Harly into submission in the back corner of the tank.

Don't believe the hype that Niger triggers are a "nice" trigger like a pinktails or bluethroats. I've had about five and every single one got all territorial at some point. If all I had was my dogface puffer I could see it working, but not with any fish in there lower on the food-chain...long term, that is. ;)

Currently I have a nice bluethroat living with my matted filefish with no issues. The trigger doesn't like the wrasse but he leaves the filefish alone. In fact the filefish thinks he's number one when it's food time, he's right up front face against the glass and nobody really messes with him.

btw, I got the filefish for aiptasia just like you and it is history now after my tank had been completely inundated. I can't tell you how happy I am with my filefish. What's more is he's become a favorite around here. The cammo effect is very interesting and he's got some personality to him.

Get some Joe's Juice or Aiptasia X if you have a couple that are too big for the filefish. He'll just take care of all the little ones ime.

progman- i know im part of the bandwagon but i dont have the tank right now, all i know itll be atleast a 180 when i move (this year). i figure i have 1 year, most likely 2 atleast until he is too big for the 55.

alton- ya my undy at a flame, maxima, YWG and LMB. now he is in a tank at an LFS lol, by himself :P im hoping the niger is an angel.

snausy- how big were they until they got to be a clown trigger? mine is about 3" right now, got him when he was a 2" bugger :)

im hoping he will be nice, he is to the chromis, maroon and 3 strip.

good to know a bluethroat works with a filefish. wish i sprung on one fo those before the niger, but all were 4+". what size tank is it in? how big is' too big for the filefish'?

so noone really answered my questions specifiaclly.

1) soudns like i have a chance for filefish and bluethroats to work btu what abotu a niger?
2)this one is still unanswered, can a baby pinktail (or a bluethroat) live with a baby niger in a 55 for a year or two?
3)can a pinktail, bluethroat, or niger live with a 4" yellow tang in a 75 reef? was thinking for this to be the fall back for now until i find a larger tank.
4) is the bluethroat or pinktail a better trig for temperment?

If you do not already have the other tank (ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU DON'T HAVE THE OTHER TANK) ready I would not put any other triggers or aggressive fish with that Niger in the 55. Just like all other triggers they can snap and make a mess of anything else in the tank especially with your clownfish and chromis.

As far as your other questions:
  1. Bluethroat is a much tamer fish then the Niger. I wouldn't trust a filefish with a Niger long term.
  2. NO MORE TRIGGERS IN YOUR 55. Sorry for the caps but I had to emphasize this one. Niger triggers for one get huge and grow quick. All triggers also have a very large bioload.
  3. It may be possible, but no trigger is guaranteed Reef Safe. 75g is already cutting it close for any tang let alone a trigger as well. A trigger's bioload can also destroy a reef tank.
  4. Bluethroat is a more peaceful fish then a Niger or Pinktail. You may also consider a Sargassum.

Of course every fish is different and many fish from the same species have a very different personality. All we can do really is tell what we THINK we know and what has worked and not worked for us in the past.

I finally gave up on my Niger dream and "settled" for a very beautiful bluethroat and we've all been quite happy with him. I was afraid that he wasn't as stunning to look at but I was wrong. The bluethroat's yellow lined tail and striking blue in the throat is very beautiful indeed and he is all trigger, no doubt about it. He has lots of personality and has been nice for a few years now.

To answer your question all my Nigers seemed to become territorial when they got to be about 5-6". Once they were big enough to become boss I think. :uzi: My bluethroat is 6" now and like I said even he has decided he doesn't like my pinkface wrasse and chases him from time to time. He's a TRIGGER...even the bluethroat will be a trigger. However the bluethroat is a deep-water fish and I think the difference in natural habitat might have something to do with it's "kinder" temperment.

ONE trigger per tank until you have something much bigger imho. Fight the urge! :D I think they all should be fine with the tang. If anything the tang would need to watch out eventually.

dont mind the caps SkullV i just wanted a straight answer lol. wow my spelling SUCKS...

1) figured
2) lol awe man! i was just taking some pics and the niger looks so small, thatll change tho :'( as for bioload, have a SWC120 and a buttload of cheato. workign for me, i feed like 3 times a day, mroe if i feel like it.
3) ya i hear the problem is with inverts.... im not too worried bout bioload, i do know it is alot tho.
4) figured again, i was checking out the sargassum (love em) but i dont like the price tag....

so if i could find a home for the niger in a trigger tank somewhere, would i be ok with replacing it with a bluethroat (or sargassum if i find one under $100)? i know its not a good habit to buy fish then get rid of em but i screwed up so ya lol.

My niger was banished to the sump last year, unfortunately not before putting a few notches on his belt. It started with a new addition, but once he figured out how fun it was to kill all bets off. Everybody was fair game. Ive had him for about 4 years now

One of the most personable fish Ive ever had, he loves to play all kinds of assorted games with me, but everybody else he now likes to kill

Hes plenty happy in the sump all by himself now. He spits at me whenever he wants attention...or fed more
