I suppose somebody should post something. Rather than go outside the box, I went inside the pumpkin. I stuck my wife's iPhone into one of our jack-o-lanterns and snapped a shot his friends. Please excuse the poor quality, her phone didn't care for the low light shot.

I just recently went out to one of our State parks in Shenandoah Valley, VA. I tried out my first attempts to capture the night sky with the Milky Way gas/dust cloud. This picture doesn't do it any justice. Where I live there is a lot of light pollution and can only really see the constellations. But in Shenandoah Valley there is very little light pollution. I could see the Milky Way gas/dust cloud with the naked eye along with thousands of stars. I was truly blown away. I'm kicking myself for not trying a longer exposure. This was only a 30 sec exposure. You can barely see some of the cloud.

That is spot on when I picture a night clear sky once I get a tripod I'll take one of down here in South Florida once the mosquitos die of for the so called winter.
 
I'm going with the late entry - TrenchToast. That's really cool...love the color in the stars.
 
Ok this will give everyone a chance to plan in advance. Thanksgiving Dinner or Thanksgiving Food oriented. Obviously photos aren't expected immediately but like i said. this gives you time to think of some interesting perspectives. if this is too far into the future lemme know.




Also, about that picture. Now after reading several "HowTo's" on capturing the Milky Way I'm not kicking myself to hard now as I found out that trying to get a picture of it this time of year is difficult. Best time to try is in the Summer. I also had my ISO and aperture off what they should have been.

Not fair Louis! you live in the sticks! :lol2: Mindblowing picture man. With the major solar storm that hit Monday I was really hoping that i would get a chance at seeing the aurora borealis as they said it could possibly be seen as low as North Carolina. but yeah... -way- too much light pollution to see anything.
 
Thanks guys. yeah, looks like some more solar activity is on tap. Cloudy here now but hopefully it breaks up. Yup, it's a beautiful thing to be able to take pics like that from my driveway :). The best part is I'm only a 14 min commute from work too :). Ah, Alaskan living my friends, it's some good stuff :).

The Aurora overall, despite the increased activity levels never really got frenetic or defined. A bit of a let down actually considering the magnitude of the activity. leave it to nature to break all the rules :).

Thanks. Such a wide view I'm actually not sure. They city is to my back in the pic so I don't think it was that. Could have been a neighbors house or the moon.

That last one does it for me. The way the shapes of the framing by the trees and the aurora work together, punctuated by the bright stars, is delightful.
