Sorry it was a typo on my part... I meant the D5100 (the camera I was comparing against the T3i). I dont know if these problems exist in Nikons other cameras or if it was just the photographer from the articles impression based on the given situation. Either way that wasn't the settling point on the cameras.

I think the biggest selling point was that it gives explanations of individual functions on the camera which will significantly help my wife. Playing with the camera so far I see it can do way more than what I have done so far. Im just happy to be able to take pictures past dusk without the need for a flash..... and beign able to take pictures of the tank that look decently correct with the auto white balance.

That's fine, and I'm not arguing, just looking for info for my brain. Problem would be, the D5100 and the D7000 both use the same sensor. The D3100, D5100 and the D7000 all use the same image processing engine. If one has the problem, all or at least two of them should also. Like I've said, I only shoot in RAW. None of this would ever affect me, and I don't think I'd ever buy one of those bodies, so the point is really moot. It does make me think Canon has a Ken Rockwell out there though!!!!

I get what your saying. My wife will be taking a lot of pictures and im sure she doesn't feel like editing them in Post. While I will be shooting Jpeg/raw so I can have the chance to adjust photos in post the camera needs to be setup to allow her to shoot whatever pictures she wants by just picking it up, turning the dial, and clicking away.

Its most likely because they cameras are both really good. There isn't many differences, and like beerguy said, both cameras will shoot better pictures than most people can actually shoot.

I was at Best Buy today and took some time to look at these 2 cameras. I wanted to get familar with each of their menus and see how they felt. I would like them both based on feel and ergonomics but the thing that caught my attention was the T3i was very slow to focus and shoot. The lens did alot of hunting and pecking before it found its place and took the picture. I'm talking 1 to 2 seconds to snap a picture! The Nikon felt twice as fast at about .5 to 1 second to focus and snap. Is this due to the lens that is attached (each had the 18-55mm kit lens) or is the body of the Nikon faster?

Also, anyone have experience with the Sony Alpha SLT-A65? I made the mistake of playing with one and it is lightning quick! You press, it snaps. Easily worth the extra $200 to me if this is a good camera...guess I need to read even more reviews.

Thought I would update this semi old thread. I settled on the T3I and I love it. It does everything I want it to for now, and until I buy a macro lens I use lens filters for macro, they are a good temp fix.

I have taken hundreds of pictures of my tank with the new camera, and while I am def still learning they are turning out hundreds of times better than my cellphone pictures :p.

I am happy with my purchas so far, thanx for the help.
